Additional Features

Men in Black is one movie that has been issued in so many different DVD editions it's hard to keep them straight. The latest version is the Superbit edition, which, like other DVDs in the Superbit series, offers subtle visual and audio improvements over the version of the movie included on other DVDs. The anamorphic picture in the Superbit version is cleaner than that of the anamorphic track offered in other DVDs of this movie, though in all versions occasional grain is visible in shots of the sky. Overall, though, the picture is quite impressive with its deep, rich blacks and saturated colors. The additional DTS soundtrack on the Superbit version is very similar to the Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks issued on this and other editions of the movie, though slightly more balanced throughout.

Fans of Men in Black have a variety of editions to choose from. This is the version for video- and audiophiles who don't mind the lack of extra goodies. --Eugene Wei

Amazon.com Essential Video

This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best sci/fi comedy movies ever made, Aug 22 2007
By falcon "disdressed12" (canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
this is a very clever and witty movie.it takes a serious subject, such
as Alien Invasion and turns it on its head.there will be a lot of
laughter involved in the watching of this movie.at least there should
be.the whole premise behind it is absurd, intentionally so.there's a lot
of irony in this movie.Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith Play the two main
Men in Black characters.Jones plays agent K (Kay) and Smith plays Agent
J(Jay)K is the straitlaced veteran who reluctantly trains a
newcomer, who takes the nickname or code name K(Smith).Jones and Smith
work brilliantly together.Jones as the strait man and Smith as his
comic foil.these two have some great comic chemistry.whoever had the
idea to pair these two up deserves a medal.i don't think they could have
found two more perfectly suited actors on the planet.but amid all the
hilarity, their is some serious stuff happening, and that is handled very
well.even the serious scenes are played for laughs.this is in my top
five in comedies.brilliant. 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a bug-a-boo, Jun 29 2006
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
People go through life oblivious to the reality around them. As pointed out in this movie, at one time everyone knew the world was flat; and now everyone knows we are alone in the universe. But what if we are wrong? Who will protect us? "Men in black used to be the term for the bad guys. This movie shows they are our last line of defense. This is a fun movie and there are many great actors to add to the fun.

Every one is so busy watching Tommy Lee Jones make his stoic looks and Will making one-liners that they miss the person that hold it all together. In addition, that person has to do act throughout the movie in an Edgar suit. Have you ever tried one on? Vincent D'Onofrio has to look unnatural and act natural. This was one movie where I felt sorry for the bug. He even drops his snack (Linda Fiorentino) near the end. It just shows that bugs lead a hard life.

If you are into recent bug movies, look for "Out There" where they mention bugs in a rug

5.0 out of 5 stars Different type of illegal aliens in New York, Jul 12 2004
By Rocco Dormarunno (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Men in Black (VHS Tape)
So much has been written about the brilliance of this gooey sci/fi comedy, that it would be redundant for me to tell you how great it is. But what I enjoyed most about "Men In Black" is that it is such a New York film.

When Will Smith is being oriented to his new job by Tommy Lee Jones, he's informed that many New Yorkers are disguised space aliens. "Like cab drivers?" Smith asks. "Not as many as you think," Jones responds.

The fact that the MIB have a car that can defy gravity is funny enough, but the fact that it needs such a vehicle to fight the perpetual traffic in the Midtown Tunnel is even funnier.

An alien disguised as a dog in an I LOVE NEW YORK tee-shirt is fairly funny. But when it speaks with a New Yawk accent as thick as Bugs Bunny's it makes it funnier.

When the edgar bug alien hauls a mideastern cab driver out of his cab, not funny. When he tosses his wooden-bead back massager at him, funny. But on top of that, when he throws the ubiquitous air freshner out, then its hysterical (without being racist).

The whole concept that the World's Fairgrounds in Queens is a hangar for spaceships is just brilliant. And I've always wondered what that structure at the head of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel was!

Glimpses of the World Trade Center are a little bitter to take, even now. And there is that sense that this film is from an innocent pre 9/11 time but, really, the rest of the movie still rings true of the New York of today.
