Product Description

Book Description

Formula 1 Technology offers an in-depth look at the engineering, design and production of Formula 1 cars. It focuses on the most technically challenging years, showing how the technology and engineering have evolved from mechanical systems, most of which one could hold in the hand, look at closely, and see how they should work, to systems dominated by silicon wafers so small one can hardly see them.

Author Peter Wright identifies and outlines five parameters -- Power, Weight, Tire Grip, Drag and Lift -- and shows how each can be maximized. In addition, he describes the variety of technologies (including those that have been banned over the years) that are involved, not just in the makeup of the Formula 1 cars, but also in the component manufacturing, systems testing, and the actual racing of the cars.

About the Author

Peter Wright has been involved with Formula 1 for 35 years. He has worked directly for Formula 1 teams, and has also worked on relevant technologies, including aerodynamics, composites and closed-loop control systems. He has seen first-hand the most technically stimulating and challenging period, and has seen the industry grow in size and sophistication.

5.0 out of 5 stars F1 Technology Inside-Out, Mar 3 2004
By Evandro Menezes "Evandro Menezes" (TX, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Many such books have been written before, but mostly by people outside the F1 world, primarily journalists. In rare exceptions such books have fallen short of bringing the reader inside the technology of F1, at least not closer than anyone could get through either magazines or other media.

Having been an F1 designer for decades, penning a few winning cars, in competitive teams along side beacons of the auto-sports gave the author an unique perspective in the technology used in F1 until his retirement.

He doesn't try to go all the way back in details or to forecast the future from when the book was written. He just gives an honest witness at the technical side of F1 from the pits, and brilliantly so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, May 6 2003
This is an excellent guide to the major systems of an F1 car. Already a little dated because F1 changes so fast, it is still very informative and covers in depth all the technology that goes into these cars. The author worked in F1 for over 20 years for many top teams, he even helped pioneer many of the technologies that he describes in the book. A must buy for anyone wanting a look at why these cars are so fast.

4.0 out of 5 stars easily understood book, Oct 26 2002
By dstyndall (chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent book.
It is easily understood even for the neophyte to F1 like myself. The writing isnt too dry and it is easy to follow the writer's ideas. The layout is also intuitive especially the first chapter which gives an historical perspective and helps to set up the following chapters.
My only gripe is that the author doesnt mention the significant contribution of the pre World War 2 Auto Union to the current midengine design of formaula 1 cars.
Also wished the illustrations were better and more detailed
