Josh Spiller is a long-distance truck driver. Although his girlfriend is pregnant, he's got no major personal problems--until the day he rolls into a small town called Furnace, where a middle-aged woman pushes a baby carriage straight into his wheels and then vanishes. The dead baby's teenage mother and other passers-by swear the wind caused the carriage to roll, and the police take Josh for a troublemaker when he insists on writing a statement to the contrary. Shaken, Josh hits the road again, only to find that it's not so easy to get away from Furnace; something inhuman is hot on his heels. A pretty hitchhiker recognizes a mysterious scrap of writing in his truck as ancient runes spelling out--on human skin--a horrific curse. From then on, all roads lead back to Furnace as Josh races to unscramble a weird puzzle involving a wealthy town councilor, the Philosopher's Stone, and a demon who will destroy Josh in three days unless he returns the runes to their rightful place.

The rotating point of view can be confusing, and the language (Gray is Scottish) occasionally doesn't ring true to an American ear. Nevertheless, this is a grand, terrifying tale. --Ce texte provient de la Hardcover édition.

Product Description

Alchemy: the summoning and controlling of demons. Those who cross the alchemist are often disposed of. The easiest way to do this? Cast the runes: strips of flesh from the dried skin of a child sacrifice, inscribed with the time the victim has yet to live....

When trucker Josh Spiller pulls into the small town of Furnace, Virginia, all he wants is a decent meal before getting back on the road. Instead he witnesses a baby's violent death, and he can't convince the sheriff that the well-dressed woman he saw at the scene is responsible. Shaken by the experience, Josh flees Furnace. But the horror continues as he begins to feel burning eyes watching his every move. As Josh's grip on what's real and what's imagined starts to falter, he makes a bizarre discovery -- someone has slipped him a strip of what appears to be parchment, inscribed with a disturbing message: five days alive permitted.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Definitely not my favorite, Sep 17 2001
Par TorchRedCorvette (Grand Forks, ND United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Furnace (Hardcover)
Other reviewers related the story so I'll stick to my critique...The story itself isn't too bad. I didn't expect the twist toward the end; the book was interesting enough to keep me occupied in the airport.
I didn't care for her gory description in the beginning, about the baby who got run over by the main character's truck. Anyone who is the least bit squeamish will most likely feel ill if they also have a good imagination like I do. I also thought it could be scarier, it just didn't feel believable to me. (for instance, I like Stephen King because some of his material is closer to reality and the way people actually act.) Other reviewers also had good points about some of the language being a bit different.

Basically, it's okay if you have nothing better to read.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Maybe not original but highly readable, Jui 24 2001

This review is from: Furnace (Mass Market Paperback)
This book may not be very original, but the characters are believable and things keep moving along. There is a fairly entertaining twist at the end of the book involving a major character that I didn't see coming. The description of the demon/elemental was decently scarey. I also liked the the protagonist was an alchemist and not a witch; I thought that was an interesting twist on the genre. Recommended.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable, if predictable, Mai 26 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Furnace (Mass Market Paperback)
Furnace is an enjoyable read for those who are into the less gory and more creepy type of horror fiction. While not quite achieving Stephen King-esque complete lack of style, Gray does use very straightforward storytelling, which is so effective in horror novels. The story is generally engaging, despite being utterly predictable. Predictability in itself is not a bad thing (it's what puts the suspense in an Hitchcock film) but it loses its luster when you are not supposed to have "figured it out".

On a couple of occasions Gray is a tad too aware of the fact that she is writing a horror novel and embarrassing phrases like "It was Hell calling" sneak in. Characters are nearly three dimensional, but mostly boil down to walking stereotypes. The reader does get a sense of the main character, Josh Spiller, having some depth to him; however he is about the only one who does and it's not particularly well-explored.

Nevertheless, I did find Furnace to be an "page-turner" and would recommend it to others with the above caveats in mind.
