Product Description

From AudioFile

The sixth book of the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser, set in North Carolina from 1772 through 1777, provides glimpses of the beginnings of the American Revolutionary War and reacquaints us with the extended Fraser clan and friends. Geraldine James enchants the listener with her varied accents, from British and Scots to twentieth-century American and an occasional Irish brogue. Using foreknowledge and their usual survival skills, Claire doctors the hurts and Jamie avenges the wrongs. James's performance brings out the adventurer in the listener. Some pops and skips are audible throughout, adding charm to the narration and the ever complicated plots. This story vibrates with the energy of an America seeking its freedom and the battles that ensue, philosophically and physically, throughout this tumultuous period. M.B.K. From Booklist

After waiting nearly four years since The Fiery Cross (2001), readers will find every expectation fulfilled in the sixth book of the popular Outlander series. Gabaldon shines as she unfolds the continuing story of the Frasers, heartbreakingly heroic highlander Jamie and his time-traveling wife Clare. Set during the three years leading up to the American Revolution, this compulsively readable mix of authentically set historical fiction and completely satisfying romance maps both violent loss and strong family ties. On the eve of war much is changing on Fraser's Ridge and Jamie and Claire encounter much harm. This vivid and haunting novel, therefore, brings an aching sadness, but it is balanced with sheer joy, revelation, and solace. The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters. Gabaldon's ability to invoke the heroic and the harrowing writ large, while also creating moments where you dare not take a breath for fear of missing something tiny and fine, is her hallmark. For it is in describing the sound of rain on the roof, Jamie's injured hand, or the understanding between father and daughter that the world of the novel comes alive and offers readers an enthralling experience. 3.0 out of 5 stars Yes & No, Jan 9 2006
By A Customer
I am an avid fan of the Outlander series but was very disappointed with the Fiery Cross. I had high hopes for A Breath of Snow and Ashes but found I was just as frustrated when I started to read it as I was with FC. Not much plot, too much gratuitous titillation, etc., etc. Once I started to view each chapter as a short story, however, I found it much improved.

I felt that things picked up towards the end and were reminiscent of the earlier books but found the dual kidnappings rather redundant. While I'd rather not say goodbye to Jamie and Claire, it's probably best to wrap things up and start something new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Outlander Series, Nov 12 2005
By A Customer
A Breath Of Snow And Ashes is the best of the Outlander Series, and I thought each was great reads. The author has out done herself on this fine piece of literature. I also recommend along with allof the Outlander Novels, Fire In The Ice by Katlyn Stewart

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT DISAPPOINTING, Jan 3 2006
By A Customer
This latest installment is better than the last one, but on the whole isn't anywhere near as good as the first four were. The story flows better, some parts are very intense and gripping (reminding us of the "old", pre-Fiery Cross Diana), but some plot points are very weak and repetitive, some characters are severely misused, and some sections you need to skip over to keep from falling asleep. (Mrs Galbadon also retains her previous obsession with sex - straight, gay, animal and, in this case, even borderline incestuous. It sometimes feels as though every other scene ends with characters "swiving"). Having said that, one gets the distinct feeling that Mrs Gabaldon and her publisher have decided to milk the Outlander franchise for all it's worth. A story that could have been neatly wrapped up in one final, 1,000-page tome is now being stretched and diluted over three books and more than 2,000 pages. This is most unfortunate. We, the readers who made these books the success that they are, deserve more respect.
