Feisty, independent Carrie would like to make up her own mind, but an invisible "blood tie" to Cyrus Kerrick, her evil sire, leaves her in his thrall—she can't help lusting after his body and power. A deadly game of wits develops between Carrie and Cyrus, whose desire for companionship masks his plot for world domination. Carrie, Cyrus and Nathan are all well drawn, as is the love triangle that develops among them. The book's level of gory detail—the narrator is, after all, a newly minted emergency room doctor—may put off all but the most stalwart of readers, but if you've got the stomach for it, this fast, furious novel is a squirm-inducing treat. I purchased this book from my local bookstore as an employee recommendation in the horror/vampire section. I'd never heard of Jennifer Armintrout before and for good reason...this is her debut novel and the 1st in a three book series. I admitt I left it sitting on my shelf as I read Charlaine Harris and Rachel Caine but I finally got around to reading this and boy was I happy I did!
The story is about a young intern who gets turned into a vampire one night when she strolls into the morgue. This author gives us a new take on vampires, doing away with a lot of the usual mythology associated with them. I can't really go into detail without giving away some of the plot but it can either make an old genre new again for those who are tired of the same ol' vamps, or it can put people off liking these vamps.
This story has great characters that are well drawn out and complex as well as great action sequences, enough sexual tension without it becoming an Anita Blake porno, and dramatic moments that tug at the heart-strings.
I recommend it for those who like urban fantasy as well as vampire fiction with a twist. For those who enjoy Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and Kelley Armstrong. The ending is satisfying enough to close the book but open-ended enough to leave you wanting more from this series and these characters. The next two novels are going to be available in February and June 2007 respectively.
This is a promising young author and I look forward to more of this series and well as other future projects. Give it a go.

I'd never heard of her until I saw this book on the shelves,
but it was so worth picking up.
She somehow manages to make you love the bad guy as much as you hate him!

For a debut book, this is a super strong start! The story sucked me in from the get-go and has an interesting twist on the ever popular vampire genre. The characters are strong resulting in an interesting tension between a few of them. A good read from start to finish.
