From Publishers Weekly

Unrelated murder cases plague Lincoln Prairie, Ill., police detective Marti MacAlister in her fifth outing (following Done Wrong, 1995). Elderly Sophie Admunds's demise looks accidental until the medical examiner's report finds oil on her shoes and a bruise more in keeping with a push than her fatal fall down the stairs. Her elder son, who had been pressuring her to sell her house, is the prime suspect. But as Marti and her acerbic partner, Vic Jessenovik, methodically investigate, another death echoes the first when the coroner assures them that the drowning of motel manager Liddy Fields was no accident. Treating the cases as separate, they are stunned when a link between the two victims emerges: both had been advocates of an abused child who had gone missing seven years earlier. Marti and Vic must follow up on the older case in order to solve the more recent murders. Bland pulls no punches in this tale as she bares the harrowing realities of child abuse for her readers.

From Booklist

Bland's Lincoln Prairie, Illinois, police detective Marti McAlister appears in her fifth case, still wrestling with the demands of job, family, and boyfriend. This time, the seemingly unrelated murders of two women stump Marti and her partner, Jessenovik, until they discover that both victims had a connection to an eight-year-old unsolved case concerning the disappearance of a young girl, a victim of child abuse by her father and brothers. When a retired teacher and a social worker who were involved with the old case are also murdered, suspicion begins to fall on the missing girl's surviving family. This series has previously dealt with the grim histories of other highly dysfunctional families. While Bland pulls no punches in describing the appalling human capacity for cruelty, she counterbalances the world's evil with the character of Marti, a woman who seeks justice rather than retribution and who will not let herself be robbed of her own capacity for love and caring because so many others lack it. A stellar installment in an excellent series.

An old woman falls down some basement stairs and ends up dead. Accidents do happen. Marti and Vik are sure that this case is the result of an accident. Forensic evidence proves otherwise so Marti and Vik must expend their energy on solving this case and another one.

You would think the detectives would have enough on their hands with two murders but before they know it a string of accidents and beatings also occur which further drains the team. All through their investigation they're led to an unsolved case of a little girl's disappearance seven years ago. A pandora's box of abuse, guilt and murder unfolds before them.

Keep Still won't keep you still as you wonder how the criminal justice system fails its young and old people. Marti and Vik get a new member on the team, Lupe, who is more than a match for the vice cops, Cowboy and Slim. Join with this team and engaging story as they solve this complex mystery.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Good Book, Janv. 23 2001
Par Un client
In my search to find a great Murder Mystery to recommend for my book club I stumbled upon "Keep Still", I didn't recommend this book only because the first few pages didn't grip me. However, a few month later I picked the book up again and became entranced in the plot, the characters, and the setting. The book really picked up after the second murder. What seemed like two completely separate incidents began to weave together, until the end where the author developed a common thread which connected the two. Great writing, great ending! If you're looking for another excellent mystery, try "When Death Comes Stealing" by Valerie Wilson Wesley --- the book I did choose. You won't be disappointed.

5.0étoiles sur 5 An excellent book, Aoû 20 2000
Par Helen (Highgate, South Australia, Australia) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This author has a gift for writing. The plotting here is tight and compellingly unputdownable. The characterisation is believable and some characters among the main protagonists are warm and engaging. I hope that this author has a deservedly long career in this genre.
