Product Description

From Amazon.com

Physics professor Dr. Jane Darlington spends her 34th birthday in tears. She wants a baby, but not a husband. Where can she find an average or, preferably, stupid man? She decides that Cal Bonner, legendary quarterback for the Chicago Stars is perfect. Jane sets her plan into action and after some trail and error she succeeds. But the results are more than she bargained for when Cal discovers her duplicity. How can a football player with an interfering family and a nerdy professor who has never known family love ever fall in love? With lots of honesty, understanding and a whole lot of humor. Don't miss this one! It's filled with engaging characters, laughs galore and a feel-good ending. If you enjoy it as much as I did, try Phillips's Heaven, Texas. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Library Journal

Lonely, single, and 34, brainy physicist Jane Darlington is determined to have a baby?even if she has to pretend to be a hooker (and a "birthday present" for football star Cal Bonner) to do it. She doesn't expect, however, that her quarterback is a whole lot smarter than Jane had hoped, definitely more honorable than she had expected, and simply won't take no for an answer. Although the initial premise (while funny) is a stretch, the protagonists are strong and appealing and draw the readers into a sensual, heartwarming story that is graced with some interesting secondary characters, including a savvy backwoods grandmother with ideas of her own. Phillips (Kiss an Angel, Avon, 1996) lives in the Chicago area.

4.0 out of 5 stars Father Wanted, Dec 7 2005
I found this story to be entertaining and typical of the SEP style and manner of writing. It seems most of the women in Phillips' books are underhandedly seeking the opposite sex and always seem to know they love them first, portraying the male figure to be a blockhead when it comes to his feelings. Eventually the men in these stories come around, but sometimes (as w/Kevin in "This Heart of Mine") they almost need a hammer to the head to know what they are feeling. The main focus of the story consists of Dr. Jane Darlington, genius scientist, looking for a less-than-average intelligent man to father her would-be child in order that the child not grow up a freak as Jane did - attending college at the age of 14! Along comes Cal Bonner, jock and superstar (i.e., in Jane's mind, all muscle and no brains) football player and Jane is convinced Cal is the perfect father figure. The situation is a little like a comedy sitcom, however, the characters are very likeable and the story is well written. I gave this book 4 stars because of the character development and excellent story telling, in particular, the Bonner family trials and tribulations as well as resolutions. Annie Glide is my favorite character in the story and I really enjoyed the interaction with Annie and Jane as the two woman give and take equally to their newly-formed friendship. If you want light, enjoyable reading with an "I Love Lucy" (R-rated) tone, you should definitely read "Nobody's Baby But Mine," the third book in the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby ,You're The Best!!, Mar 10 2004
By "klpepsi" (Indiana) - See all my reviews
Dr. Jane Darlington, a genius physics professor, wants nothing more than to have a baby. She has a couple of obstacles in her way though. She currently has no prospects for the father. And growing up as a genius made her feel like a freak, so she wants to spare her child this pain. Therefore, she needs a very special man. A stupid man. When she sees Cal Bonner, the famous Chicago Stars quarterback, her prayers seem to be answered. He's handsome, a jock, and with his good ol' boy ways, he must be slow-witted. But when he figures out what she's done, he's not about to go along blindly with her plans. On top of that, Jane begins to realize, a little too late, Cal may be a whole lot smarter than he looks.

This is the third installment in the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series. A funny, fast-paced, interesting love story between real people, each with their own set of insecurities.

SEP has an uncanny gift with writing complex, three dimensional characters. They become so real, I half expect to look up from the page and find them in the room with me. Her stories and characters wiggle themselves under your skin and in your heart where they stay.

There is a secondary story with Cal's parents that was quite good as well. Overall, I certainly enjoyed this book, except it was difficult getting through the portion where Cal was so angry and spiteful toward her. Even after considering this, it's still a favorite book of mine. Once Jane decides she will no longer sit back and tolerate his behavior, well then it really gets good! I still smile every time I see a box of Lucky Charms cereal!

I really hated the first 1/3rd of the book. The only character who wasn't immoral was Kevin Tucker. All the other secondary characters were just plain sad or dispicable. Read more
