Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Jack Kirby's old Eternals series gets a serious dusting-off from Gaiman (Anansi Boys) and artist Romita. The Eternals, a super-race, are now scattered and forgetful of their powers and immortality, living mortal human lives of supreme normalcy (Sersi is a New York party girl, while Makkari believes himself to be Bellevue ER doc Mark Curry). Meanwhile their age-old enemies, the Deviants, stalk the earth with nefarious intentions, and at least one of the super-duper-race Celestials (who created both Deviants and Eternals eons ago) may be returning to Earth. The source of all this forgetfulness and strife appears to be the eternally 11-year-old Sprite, who desires to be allowed to age like an actual human. It is easy to spot Gaiman's touch in this modern-day clash between ancient forces, as he shies away from Kirby's '70s-era, Chariots of God–style alien mythologizing to focus more on the characters' slow coming to grips with the enormity of their identity and the loss of humanity that comes from being an Eternal. Romita's storytelling is strong without coming near Kirby's epochal original. While Gaiman fans will still sign up, it isn't long before the tale gets tangled in the Olympian scope of this often baffling struggle. (May)

4.0 out of 5 stars Is Gaiman eternally good?, Aug 10 2009
By Sebastien Patenaude "Québec Dragon" (Montréal, Québec) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Neil Gaiman, of Sandman fame, rarely does work for Marvel so it's a treat when he indulges us. He takes a faction of immortal super-powered individuals (not gods but close) created in the seventies by Jack Kirby that were on the fringes of the Marvel Universe, barely used anymore, and revamps them. He both reintroduces and modernizes them keeping the same basic concept but changing certain things. Gaiman does that by making us follow a normal human doctor that is contacted by a lunatic man telling him he's an Eternal. Other normal characters are introduced that might or might not be Eternals, except that if some of them are, why did they forget and why are their powers gone? Fans will have some early advantage recognizing characters but be intrigued anyway. Newcomers will still be able to enjoy the very good story and not have trouble following it. It's newbie-friendly and you have a cameo by a famous armored avenger for good measure.

John Romita Jr has a very original art style, rather angular and square for lack of a better description. His men are quite manly and square-chinned. That being said, he does really beautiful work. He's extremely adept at varying poses and doing action. Some of his scenes are quite majestic which is appropriate considering the material. I found the colors quite nice also. This trade paperback reprints Eternals numbers 1 to 7. In terms of extras for the hardcover version, you have a 4 page interview with Neil Gaiman, character sketches from John Romita Jr (along with the original looks of the Eternals), a 2 page story proposal for the Eternals by Gaiman (different from what was published) and a 3 page article on Jack Kirby's Eternals. I think those extras are in the paperback version too since the number of pages is the same. Eternals is not Gaiman's best comics work but it's quite enjoyable especially for those who enjoy mythology and to see how Gaiman can revive comic characters that were barely used anymore while remaining mostly faithful. Most flattering of all, it makes you want to see the Eternals again after the book is over.
