Book Description

Years ago, Lieutenant Uhura befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo, a land of graceful, catlike beings. The two women exchanged forbidden songs and promised never to reveal their secret.

Now the Starship Enterprise™ must race to save the Eeiauoans before a deadly plague destroys them all. Uhura's secret songs may hold the key to a cure, but the clues are veiled in layers of mystery. The plague is killing humans, threatening other planets -- and Kirk must crack the code before the Enterprise succumbs! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Ingram

A plague has been ravaging the planet Eeiauo, a world of cat-like beings, and the Enterprise has come to try to contain it before it kills all the Eeiauoans or spreads to other planets. Years earlier, Uhura had befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo, and the two women had exchanged songs as an intimate bond, swearing never to reveal them to anyone. But the only hope for a cure may lie in the song given to Uhura, and they must penetrate its layers of mystery if there's any hope for Eeiauo, or the Enterprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another Trek novel!, Dec 14 2003
Uhura's Song was the first Star Trek novel I ever read, and almost every one since has been a disappointment. Some Trek novels can be formulaic with plots that are painfully predictable. But Uhura's Song is so much more! The alien cultures are wonderfully developed, and the original characters are delightful. If the book lacks a bit as far as technical precision goes (the portrayal of the universal translator is different here than in other Trek works, and I wonder how such a thing could exist), the author more than makes up for it by giving us characters and cultures that will not easily be forgotten.

I read this book for the first time about sixteen years ago. It's the type of book that you can just randomly open to a page and start reading. Definitely my favorite of the Trek novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A grand adventure..., Oct 1 2003
By T. J. Doss (Commonwealth of Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
...and one of the best Star Trek novels ever, Uhurah's Song is not just another programmatic Star Trek novel but an excellent novel in its own right. That it was written as a Star Trek novel is a blessing to both the series and its readers.

Janet Kagan does an outstanding job in her portrayal of Kirk & Co., the creation and inclusion of the wholly new and marvelous "guest star" character of Dr. Evan Wilson (perhaps more accurately referred to as Tail-Kinker!), and her conception and depiction of the alien civilizations, worlds, and cultures.

The story is exceptional on many levels. It entertains as an adventure/science fiction story seasoned with humor, history, motivation, and emotion. It intrigues as a well-written exploration of science, medicine, and alien cultures. It perplexes with a mystery that lasts all the way to the last few pages. It educates as an allegory that demonstrates both the insanity and danger inherent in intolerance, deliberate ignorance, and prejudice.

As an aside, considering that this novel was originally published in 1985, the fictitious ADF syndrome epidemic depicted in the novel is clearly symbolic of the AIDS epidemic that was devastating our world at that time (and continues to do so). There are many similarities between the two epidemics and this work of fiction provides some good commentary on the real-world situation. But I digress...

At 384 pages in small print paperback, "Uhurah's Song" is a long journey but well worth the effort - also a well written "Return of the Tail-Kinker" story is long overdue and would be greatly appreciated!

5.0 out of 5 stars star trek at it's best, Jul 16 2002
By tammy (chicago, il United States) - See all my reviews
when the planet of eeiauo is struck by a plague, it asked the
federation for help. the being of this world are catlike and they
are dying by the thousands. uhura had befriended one of them years ago and when she finds out that her friend has also contracted the plague, she and spock pull out all the plugs to find out the secret that the eeiauo are not originally from that
planet but are outcasts from another. one of the eeiauoans gives
them vital information on the location of the other planet when
humans are also infected by the plague. the enterprise sets out
to find the other planet and finds that it's inhabitants are not
any more eager to discuss their long missing relations on eeioau
either. this leads to a lot of diplomacy in the strangest forms
and how they eventually win their trust is interesting enough to
get the book itself.
