Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

A high school basketball star struggles with guilt and depression following the drunk-driving accident that killed his best friend. Short chapters and alternating viewpoints provide "raw energy and intense emotion," said PW. Ages 12-up.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up--In the second book of Sharon M. Draper's trilogy (Atheneum, 1994) about teens faced with grim and realistic situations in a contemporary urban high school, star basketball player Andy Jackson can't recover from the depression building in him after his drunk driving resulted in the death of his friend, Rob. About half a dozen actors share the reading of this emotionally taut narrative which unfolds in conversations, notes, reports, and other documents. Andy, his teammates, his girlfriend, his parents, and his little brother each present both their observations and their concerns as Andy moves from shock to depression and finally to suicide in the wake of his grief. The revelation of Andy's failed attempts to get help for himself is especially keen, and the relationships among these variously mature characters is insightfully genuine. While Draper's characters are distinct and well realized, the cast of readers alternate between assuming specific roles and reading full passages in a single voice without regard to its variety of characters, making it difficult for listeners to associate specific tones and rhythms with these characters. To further muddy listener perceptions, the audio publisher has released the three titles in the trilogy (Forged by Fire, Tears of a Tiger, and Darkness Before Dawn) in a different chronology and makes reference on the packaging that this title is the first. The trailer at the end of the recording suggests listeners might want to listen to Cry, the Beloved Country or Harriet Tubman next, odd alternatives in place of Darkness Before Dawn(Recorded Books, 2002) which begins where this novel ends. Strong reading and Draper's excellent storytelling, however, outweigh the inattention to detail, making this an audiobook important to all collections for teens.--Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever, Jul 4 2004
Sharon M. Draper's Tears of a Tiger is the story of an unraveling black teenager who goes through a lot of pain, stress, and trauma. Sharon M. Draper writes in such a way that her literature literally brings tears to your eyes. This book describes bonds between friendship and love in a spectacular way. Tears of a Tiger presents the readers with lessons about drunk-driving and love.
17-year-old Andy Jackson discovers a world of depression when he and three other friends live a fatal car-accident. Andy, Rob, Tyrone and B.J. are four friends who celebrate after success in a high-school basketball game. All except B.J. drink during their ride on the car, even the driver, Andy. The likely conclusion that would occur happened, Andy crashed the car. All survived but Rob.
After Rob's death, Andy starts to go into a world of his own where he faces a lot of problems. He feels that Rob's death was his fault because he caused the car to crash. Without Andy, Rob wouldn't have been dead. That's not Andy's only problem. Andy's been having a lot of problems with his girlfriend. Andy's girlfriend, Keisha doesn't seem to like the fact that Andy has been in his own world. Lately she has noticed that Andy ignores her and starts being more and more of a pain. After they break up something terrible happens. If you read the book you'll find out.
This book was written in such a way that it was hard to put down. The author's style made you want to keep on reading. Each chapter was very unique. There were chapters that were newspaper articles and also phone conversations. By reading this book, I thought the author was a very creative person.
Tears of a Tiger is one of those books that the reader can generate a lot of thought. This book is filled with connection to the real world. This book shows the reader the consequences of drunk driving. Many teens can relate to this book, and that's what makes this book fun to read.
All and all, this was a very satisfying book. One downside may be that the author uses too much dialogue, other than that it's perfect. I would definitely recommend this book to adults and young adults. The ending left me hanging and wondering a lot about what was going on in Andy's head. I was thinking about all those people whose lives were ruined by drunk-drinking. This book left me thinking about how well the author constructed the narrative and how the situation was so realistic. This is one of those books which a reader can not put down because of its superior quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tears Of A Tiger, Jun 3 2004
By english2vazquez (Philadelphia,PA USA) - See all my reviews
The main character of this book was Andy Jackson. After they won their Basketball game a few of the team went out got drunk and got in an accident and Robert Washington, the Captain, was a passanger in the front seat while Andy was driving.Robert died and Andy took it hard and he also took all the blame for Rob's death.

I tried to read many books until I found this one. It was great. It had me in suspense everyday I read it. It was real realistic because I can relate to Andy a little bit. I also enjoyed the action and the Basketball part of it. It was even emotional in some parts of the book. I was really not hoping it to end like it did but what can we do. If you dont like to read you should start on this book.
