Like a good Ganymedean farmer in the sky, Robinson (Callahan's Key) plants both feet firmly in Heinlein territory with this mostly credible pastiche of a Heinlein young adult novel circa 1955. Working from an unfinished outline and notes, Robinson tells the coming-of-age tale of Joel Johnston, who flees a broken romance to the new colony planet Brasil Novo 85 light-years away. Joel and his companions demonstrate the odd mixture of innocence and sexual experimentation that Heinlein employed, as Robinson captures the naïve yet advanced tone of Heinlein's future history. But the strain of a contemporary author trying to fit his sensibility about the future (in which nonaggression is a way of life, for example) into Heinlein's more notably militaristic mindset leaves its traces on the characters and plot, with some unexplained role reversals. Nostalgia for Heinlein's early work may pique interest in this posthumous collaboration, but old Heinlein hands may be disappointed that the book is incomplete, being all journey and no arrival. VARIABLE STAR is a novel that was outlined by the late Robert A. Heinlein in the early phase of his career. Spider Robinson, who offers full details in the afterword, used that outline to create this novel, which reads in equal parts like the works of both authors. Robinson narrates as well, and a better choice couldnt be made. Hes got a pleasant, inviting tone that makes his narration feel like a friend telling you the most incredible story about where hes been the last few years. The novel is full of philosophical insight, exploding things, and space travel. Its everything you could ask for in a visit from an old and dear friend. Spider Robinson is a top-notch narrator, and this audiobook is a whole lot of fun. S.D.D. When you take the master of Golden Age Science Fiction and combine his plotting with the writing of Spider Robinson, you get a winner.

When Heinlein died, he left behind a full plot outline (except for a lost final page) of one of his 1950 era juveniles. Robinson agreed with the estate to write a book based on the outline.

The result is first rate. One of Robinson's strengths is that he is not tone deaf, either to language or to music. Even Heinlein fans -- and I'm one -- have to admit that that's one of Heinlein's weaknesses. (The old joke about Horatio Hornblower was that he knew two songs -- one was "God Save the Queen" and the other wasn't -- could apply to Heinlein and his characters as well.)

One gets the puns that one expects from Robinson without detracting from the straight ahead plotting that one expects from Heinlein. While Robinson has been adamant that Heinlein's stuff is not didactic, this one teaches two of the same lessons that are found elsewhere in the canon: man's fate is in the stars, and a human who can resist the call of the stars is less than admirable (and maybe less than human).

Easily the best 'pure' science fiction that I've read this year.
