Product Description

From AudioFile

Sam Peek, 81, who has just experienced the death of his wife of fifty-seven years, journeys alone along Georgia back roads to his sixtieth college reunion. The dog in the title, mysterious and sometimes ghost-like, joins Sam and remains his companion throughout the story. The deceptively simple story is accomplished with skillfully crafted prose and economy of style. The author reads with an honesty and intensity superbly suited to this fine work, which deserves to be better known. M.A.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The New York Times

". . . deftly shaped and vivid book . . . a tender and bracing tale of an octogenarian fighting to live a connected and purposeful life." --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars THOSE WHO LOVE WILL KNOW HOW PERFECT IT IS, Jan 16 2000
By A Customer
This is one of those rare, perfect books that will stay with you for the rest of your life. A bittersweet premise (the prospect of growing old and dying), the book is filled with hope and love and the promise of more to come. The characters (especially the main character and his wife) are unforgettably lovable and people who run the gamut of emotions. The plot never slows, and it speaks straight to the heart. This is a special book that can stand on its own with no special effects needed. Although I'd call it "quiet," it packs an emotional wallop, but one you'll love. Anyone who's really loved will both laugh and cry when reading this book, and I can guarantee one thing--no one will ever forget it. Buy it, cherish it, give it to someone you DEARLY love. This is definitely an American classic and storytelling at its best. Sheer magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed and cried from beginning to end, Sep 8 1999
By A Customer
It all began one night, I was flipping channels on the TV and I came across the Hallmark Presentation of "To Dance With the White Dog". I sat there and laughed and cried so hard my husband couldn't figure out what I was watching. When it was over I couldn't stop talking about it. Well, that Christmas my husband gave me Terry Kay's book which was the best gift I have ever received. To Dance with the White Dog is always a part of me. I can't express how much I loved that book. I felt there was a bit of mystery, love and hope wrapped up in that book. I also felt the White Dog wanted the old man not to be sad and not to be afraid to get old. I will always cherish this book in my life and hope to pass it on to my children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasureable reading., May 12 1999
By A Customer
Being an exchange student from Brazil, I had to read this book for my literature class. I didn't like it very much in the beginning, but I kept reading it. Once I got into the story, I found it a pleasureable way to improve my vocabulary.
