Book Description

The inimitable Barbara Taylor Bradford has once again created an intimate and unforgettable story, A Secret Affair.

At thirty-three, Bill Fitzgerald, acclaimed American television foreign correspondent, is war-weary and exhausted after a long stint in Bosnia. In late November of 1995, he travels to Venice to meet an old friend, Francis Xavier Peterson.

While at the bar of the Gritti Palace Hotel on the Grand Canal with Frankie, Bill is struck by the dark beauty of a young woman seated alone. Unhappily married Vanessa Stewart is a twenty-seven-year-old glass designer from New York. The three expatriates decide that as Americans in Venice, they should celebrate Thanksgiving dinner together. That evening begins an illicit though fateful love affair.

When it is time to leave Venice, Bill plans a rendezvous with Vanessa -- they will meet in New York in December for a Christmas lunch with his daughter and mother. After an idyllic time spent together, they are both completely committed and madly in love. But they can only hope for a taste of joy from each other -- a series of planned rendezvous.

In A Secret Affair, Barbara Taylor Bradford once again touches on subjects that will stir the hearts and minds of her readers -- unconditional love and devotion, loyalty, and loss.

3.0 out of 5 stars I HATE SAD ENDINGS!, Feb 13 2002
By Patsy Nelson "Readin Diva" (Charlotte, North Carolina United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I would have given this book 4* had it not been for the sad ending. This was a love story that did not end with the couple making love and planning their future, I wished it had. I felt Vanessa's love for Bill and then I felt her loss. I am still crying over the ending. The book was worth the 3 hours I spent reading it, but I do not like sad endings. The book is short and is a quick read. I can't decide whether to recommend or trash it. If you want to read a tear jerker, maybe this is the book for you, unfortunately I am still into the happily ever after.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasent book to read., Oct 5 2001
By Liliana (Queens, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This book is one the most outstanding books i've read in my 18 years of life. It was a very beautiful story. I still can't believe that one of the main character dies at the end. Venice,Italy one of the most romantic places to be and to meet your true love then it was New York my home another place were you can enjoy life.
All i can say is that i enjoy Barbara Taylor Bradford's books and i hope people that read her novels will too i encourge you to buy and read just one novel and you will know what i am talking about.
It was a captivating work filled with glamour, intigue and ironic reversal... Richly textured, highly entertaining and stunning love and romance story.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little too mushy for me., Dec 13 2000
By Betti Trapp (Riyadh Saudi Arabia) - See all my reviews
Too perfect, too swampy, too Danielle Steele-ish for me. As a love story, it goes a long way in that genre. It is well written, the characters are lovable, the story is a good one. But you really need to be in the mood for a rather mindless, uncomplicated novel to enjoy this. I much prefer stories with a little depth. I was able to read this story in two days, there isn't much too it, and I found it pleasant yet boring in many places. If you like Harlequin, or Danielle Steele, you will enjoy this book. If you are looking for something to delve your mind into, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!!!
What happened to the Barbara Taylor Bradford I am familiar with? This must be a ghost writer using her name, because it fell flat of her usual work. Read more

I agree with the comment that the Canadian reader made, it did seem as if the author was in a hurry to complete this novel. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars What a dissapointment!
It lacked so much in plot, character definition, and the inabilitiy to hold my attention, that I suddenly found myself wondering why I kept turning the page.
