Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

What are vampires? According to Drake's fun, fanciful read, they're just another group of emotionally challenged creatures in need of a good 12-step program. In the third volume of her vampire series, Drake (Seize the Dawn) introduces Ragnor Wulfson, a 1,000-year-old vampire, formerly a Viking, who is now an antiques dealer and a vampire enforcer. When Ragnor learns that his former lover Nari, the Contessa della Trieste and a naughty vampire, is throwing a masquerade ball during Venice's Carnevale festival, he travels to the city to find out what fiendish diversions she's planned. At the party, Nari and her minions feast upon the guests, but only Jordan Riley, a well-known book critic from the States, witnesses the carnage. Despite Nari's assurances that the macabre scene was part of the evening's dramatics, Jordan is convinced that what she saw was real, but the only person who believes her is Ragnor, a mysterious hulk of a man who believes she's in danger. While the two hunt down the ancient evil that appears to be stalking Jordan, they explore their mutual passion for each other. Drake's descriptions of Venice are lush, and her colorful cast of characters will engage. Those who can overlook the novel's far-fetched plot and sensational finish will be heartily entertained by this outrageous comic book romp. (Sept.)Forecast: Print advertising in USA Today and Fangoria will entice fans of TV's favorite Vampire Slayer to check out the newest installment in Drake's series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fan of fantasy romance, April 26 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep Midnight (Paperback)
This will be a good book if you are looking for suspense and scary chases through the narrow streets and canals of Venice. However, it's not one of the authors best books. It starts off slow and the story never really forged a strong connection between the two main characters, so I would not call it a romance. The villains never seemed to have a plan, but they were scary and off their rocker most of the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Story, Mar 12 2004
By Elizabeth "lking173" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deep Midnight (Paperback)
I have been collecting vampire novels for years, and Shannon Drake's name keeps popping up. She has a series of novels. This is my second novel by her, and I think it is just an average read.

Jordan Riley travels to Venice to be with her cousin Jared and his wife. While she is there she attends a Carnivale ball given by the Contessa Nari. During the ball, Jordan wanders to a different floor and suddenly part of the guests change into beasts and began attacking the other partiers. Jordan is afraid of being killed, when suddenly a guest dressed up as a wolf saves her life, by grabbing her and throwing her into a small boat where she is safely rowed ashore.

The next day she tries to tell her cousin, the police, and even visits the Contessa, and everyone tells her she just had a bad dream. Now the rest of the story continues with Jordan trying to get someone, anyone to believe her. Her cousin is angry because she is telling tales and ruining his business contacts; her cousin's wife is angry because her husband is angry; one of the policeman may believe her but he needs more evidence; and the one person who seems to believe her, Ragnor who is also a guest at the hotel she is staying at, she doesn't trust. The plot continues like this throughout the book. Ragnor is trying to protect her, while she avoids him. Jordan looks for clues and constantly ends up alone where she feels like she is being "watched" or "followed." Personally I thought Jordan was a very annoying character; who kept getting into uncomfortable situations by not thinking them through. And she was constantly running from the one person who was trying to help her. I thought the plot of this story was weak and could have been better. An average book.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a chore, Jan 3 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep Midnight (Paperback)
This book was a chore to read, too slow, too cluttered and the love interests weren't even interested in each other much less showing any personality. The people never came out of the book they were flat and pathetic. I am an avid reader, and enjoy books that include the supernatural. It is pretty hard to make a vampire as dull and numbing as this one was. If you are interested in something interesting with a twist of the supernatural I would recommend that to read Laurell K. Hamilton or Christine Feehan over this particular author.
