Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In this steamy Regency, the second in Laurens's new Bastion Club series (following The Lady Chosen), Lord Anthony Blake, a former spy for England, finds himself at loose ends after the fall of Napoleon. Genteel widow Alicia Carrington, who's in London to chaperone her younger sister, puts an end to Anthony's ennui when she stumbles upon a dead body at a soiree and he stumbles upon her at the same time. A mysterious villain seems determined to frame Alicia for the murder, but the real danger lies in the secret she's hiding from everyone-including Anthony, who quickly insinuates himself into her life. As in all of Laurens's romances, the love scenes are passionate, and chemistry hums between the pair. Alicia is a classic Laurens heroine: plucky and determined. Anthony is high-handed at times but not offensively so. Although the romantic tension relies heavily on a few unspoken words, it's entertaining to watch the baffled couple finally admit to their feelings. Unfortunately, the mystery subplot is less compelling, depending as it does on following a paper trail that offers up little drama. Still, Laurens's fans should be more than satisfied with this heady tale.

Product Description

The Season has yet to begin, and the second member of the Bastion Club, tall, handsome Anthony Blake, Viscount Torrington, is already a target for every matchmaking mama in London. None of their flighty daughters can fix his interest, but a certain lady does...

Alicia is living a deception. Desperation has caused the determined but penniless lady to boldly launch her ravishing younger sister into the ton and have her make a spectacular match. By masquerading as the widowed "Mrs. Carrington" Alicia can act as the perfect chaperone…but fashionable ladies are not accused of murder...

When Tony Blake discovers Alicia standing over a dead body in his godmother’s garden, every instinct tells him she is innocent. His connections allow him to take control of the investigation, his social prominence provides her public support, but it is more than honor that compels him to protect her and to do everything in his seductive power to make her his.

3.0 out of 5 stars the mystery is lacking, but the romance is not, Jun 22 2004
By Kenzie L. Jardina "book sniffer" (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I enjoy Laurens' new series, though I seem to be one of few. In the second installment of the Bastion Club series, she continues in the vein of the first. Again, she isn't able to pull off the mystery element as well as she did in the Cynster series and that's a shame. They mystery plot just never seems to catch your attention, and it is (for me anyway) easily solved long before the official "unmasking". However, the characters of Alicia and Tony are compelling and well-written and I enjoyed reading their story. I didn't find the book hard to get through, but I am a fast reader. I did start skipping over long paragraphs of text when I got to the (seemingly) 100th time they kissed for 4 pages, but the sex scenes themselves were, as always, delicious. I hope in the next installment of this series that Laurens can sharpen the plot and give her well-written characters an equally well-written structure in which to fall in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It, Jun 16 2004

I really enjoyed this story. I'd rate it up there with DEVIL'S BRIDE. Anthony is very alpha. Alicia is smart and effective.

1.0 out of 5 stars I got to page 80 and couldn't read another word., Jun 9 2004
By A Customer
I was so bored by Anthony, the murder plot, and most of all, Alicia. I couldn't have cared less who killed Ruskin and Alicia was about as interesting as a wet noodle. Anthony sounded sexy, but how he could be interested in someone as boring as Alicia I don't know. Maybe she perked up a bit after page 80, but I wasn't going to stick around to find out.

Stephanie Laurens may have written too many books to come up with an original plot. This one is so overdone by S.L. that I simply couldn't force myself to read it anymore.

Sorry to all the SL fans out there - this one is a dud.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Laurens' best, but better than the first in series
Yes, the book has ideas and events that require a leap of faith (such as her moving into his house), a suspension of disbelief, but--for me--this one was so much better than... Read more

Well mainly not, and yes as the others reviewers have pointed out the sex disconnects from the story and disconnects the reader. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious and a bore
I've enjoyed many Stephanie Lauren books. Regrettably, this isn't one of them. There is a remarkably stupid mystery around which Ms. Lauren tries to craft a plot. Read more
