From Booklist

When bounty hunter Bryan's twin brother, Bruce, gets roughed up, Bryan's determined to take his place until he can find out who's responsible. The problem is, Bruce is a preacher who ministers to prostitutes. Once he begins the masquerade, Bryan finds that the only thing he hates as much as pimps are the rich snooty society women who give money to programs that help the "soiled doves." Wealthy philanthropist Shay Sommers is an exception: she actually works in the shelter she funds. One night she finds herself in trouble, and Bryan comes to the rescue. He thinks she's a lady of the night, and she thinks he's a preacher, albeit rather foul mouthed. They are drawn to each other, but must keep up their charades. Fans of Foster's sexy romantic comedies, including Unexpected [BKL S 15 03], may be surprised by this dark romantic suspense's gritty realism, while fans of tales about street preachers, such as Kathryn Shay's Trust in Me (2003) and Emilie Richards' Dragonslayer (1993), will find much to like here, too. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book in the Winston brothers saga., May 21 2004
By mahikahn (Columbus, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Secret Life Of Bryan (Paperback)
Bryan is a bounty hunter whose twin brother has been beaten by someone who he wants to stop his charity organization. In order to protect his brother and find the perpetrator Bryan poses as his twin. Unfortunately for Bryan his twin brother is a preacher running a half way house for prostitutes!

Shay Sommers is trying to do good things with the money left to her by her late husband. But the media portrays her as shallow and irresponsible.

One night Bryan mistakes her as a prostitute and takes her to the shelter so she can "turn her life around". Shay figures this a perfect opportunity to help from the inside out.

Soon Bryan and Shay start to wonder about each other, are they really what they seem? And they start to feel a whole lot more than curious!

1.0 out of 5 stars The story got off to a great start . . ., May 18 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Secret Life Of Bryan (Paperback)
I wanted to enjoy this book, the first of Ms. Foster's that I had read. I was looking for an entertaining piece of chick lit., so when I read the back cover I thought this story sounded fun. I failed to notice the cover identified it as Romance, not Literature. A big distinction in my view. At first I couldn't put it down, but about a third of the way through I lost my enthusiasm for reading it, and halfway through I gave up completely. There were too many implausible story lines. I can overlook one or two unbelievable schemes for the sake of a good tale, but more than that just muddies the story. I found it hard to believe that Shay could step out of her busy life running shelters for former sex workers, attending charity events and being hounded by the paparazzi to live in a shelter, without anyone noticing. And, why did none of the women in the shelter know Shay if she had been working shelters for so long? Why would Bryan think Shay was a sex worker for longer than a few minutes? No matter how Shay was dressed, it would be pretty obvious that a woman of her status with her level of confidence is not a pro, regardless of her sordid childhood or middleclass adolescence. What preacher worth his ministry would allow anyone, even his twin, to impersonate him? That is unethical on so many levels. Why would Bruce, the preacher, encourage his brother to get involved with a woman he thinks is a hooker and risk his ministry? I have a liberal pastor, but not even he would encourage a man to get involved or have premarital sex with a woman that he had just met. How can a twin with a hard drinking, skirt chasing, bounty hunting background so completely submerse himself in his preacher brother's life that no one notices? I expected all the women in the shelter to notice a change in personality, or something. And most of all I didn't like the lying. How could Bryan and Shay continue to lie to each other about their true identities and not be consumed with guilt? Why did everyone behave like a hormone driven teen rather than responsible adults? There was supposed to be a mystery revolving around an attack on Bruce, but halfway through the only thing that happened was more of a prank than an attack. The story seemed forced, as if the author stuck to this plot rather than let the story create a life its own. None of the characters really came to "life." They just became caricatures. I think Ms. Foster has a gift for story telling, but it didn't seem like she used her time and talents to write this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but must the author use such language ??
I adored this book, except for some of the language. I don't mean when Bryan talked to Shay or others; that was his way and it wasn't offensive at all, it's rather about... Read more
