From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–Unbeknownst to many, the fairies of Never Land have an intricate community in which everyone is useful to society. And, sadly, the newest arrival, Prilla, just doesn't fit in, for she appears without knowing what her particular talent is. Is she a tinker who likes to fix pots and pans like Tinker Bell? Or should she play with water like sweet Ree? Prilla's problems quickly become moot when the source of all magic on Never Land, a mysterious egg belonging to motherly Mama Dove, is destroyed in a vicious hurricane. Now Prilla and two other fairies must embark on a quest to save the egg and, with it, Never Land's secret of youth before it is too late. This book isn't going to bowl anyone over with its originality, and Levine isn't afraid to employ a little deus ex machina when the fancy strikes her, but overall it's an engaging tale. The story is exciting, the characters accessible if stock, and Christiana's lush, full-color illustrations breathtaking. Children already enamored of the Disney Princess line will be clamoring for it.–Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

From AudioFile

Settle down, cozy up, and listen in! Hannah Gordon transports listeners of all ages to the fairies' domain nestled within the familiar realm of Neverland. Amidst great expectation, each newborn fairy learns to identify her special talent. What will Prilla's be? She doesn't come upon it easily. Then a hurricane ravages Neverland, and Prilla embarks on a quest to save Mother Dove and her egg, the source of Neverland's youthfulness. Gordon's narration is as gentle as a fairy's kiss; her genuine tone makes us believe in these possibilities. She delights in the details of mermaids and dragons, exudes personality, whether prickly or pompous, and casts a caring magic spell over all. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg, Mars 10 2006
Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg is a fantasy story about the many individual Fairies in Never land.
One of the new fairies, Prilla, is having trouble finding her talent. She doesn’t have any friends, but Tinker Bell is one of the two fairies that help Prilla to Discover her Talent. Tinker Bell is a blonde fairy whose talent is fixing pots and pans. She was one of the first fairies that spoke to Prilla and acted like a friend to her. Prilla is a little different from the other fairies in Never land. For example, instead of saying, “I look forward to flying with you”, or for short, “Fly with you”, Prilla says, “Pleased to meet you”, which is exactly what a Clumsy (human) would say! But suddenly, something absolutely terrible happens to Mother Dove and without a talent, Prilla is sent to help Mother Dove with two other fairies named Rani and Vidia.
The main themes in this book are: Friendship, because Prilla tries to fit in and she doesn’t have a lot of friends to support her. This theme is demonstrated in this quote from the book. She looked in the full-length mirror. I look nice, she thought, and burst into tears. If only she had a friend. If only she had a talent. Then she’d have a friend.” Another theme in this book is faith, because Mother Dove believed in Prilla and believed that she was special and had a talent. Here is another quotation from the book. “Mother Dove cocked her head again. She became aware of something new about Prilla, something that had never before been in Never land. ‘You have a talent, dear, but I don’t know what it is.’” One of the other important themes is Determination, because Prilla had to be determined to be able to find out what her talent was and to be able to go on a life-risking quest to help and save Mother Dove. This is another quote from the book. “Ree called to them, and they returned. Prilla was astonished to be chosen. She wondered if it meant the queen saw talent I her. The quest would be such an adventure.”
The main characters in this book are: Prilla, Tinker Bell, Rani the water fairy whose dream is to swim, but she cannot because fairies wings get damaged when they get wet and are unable to fly, Vidia whose talent is fast-flying, but to fly faster, she plucks fresh feathers from Mother Dove, (and plucking hurts!) The sub characters in this book are Mother Dove, Queen Clarion, Terrence the dust fairy, Beck who takes care of Mother Dove and Kyto; the evil caged dragon.
Peter Pan was Gail Carson Levine’s favourite story when she was a child. She still loves writing fairy tales and Peter Pan had inspired her to write a book just about the fairies in Never Land.
This is an excellent novel by Gail Carson Levine and it is suitable for grades 2 and up. I really love this book because it is full of adventure with wonderful pictures on every page. Out of 10, I would rate this book a 9 because it is a little bit too obvious of what will happen. What will Prilla’s talent be? Will she learn to be a normal Never Fairy? Will Mother Dove be saved? I’ll bet you that you can’t go through the entire book without clapping to save Never land.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg, Mars 10 2006
Are you a “Peter Pan storybook or movie” lover? Are you looking for an amazing, fantastic, magical, great, hooking fiction book? Well, Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg is the book for you (even if The Peter Pan movie/storybook is not you favourite)! It is a magical story with fairies, sparrow men, doves, mermaids, a dragon, a pirate (Captain Hook from Peter Pan) and much more!
This is a story that is set in Never Land. It’s like another Peter Pan Story with lots of different characters! Some of the characters it has are: Tinker Bell (Of course!), Prilla, Beck, Rani, Vida, Lily, Mother Dove, Captain Hook (OH NO! TROUBLE!), Terence and Kyto the Dragon!
Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg is about some fairies and sparrow men that live at Fairy Haven. The mother of Fairy Haven is named Mother Dove. Mother Dove sits all day on an egg that Never Land depends on. If that egg gets damaged, everything in Never Land will go crazy! There will be no more magic, flying or anything else! One day, a hurricane struck and Mother Dove was blown off her precious egg and the egg broke! What will Never Land do now?
I think this is one of the top 10 stories I have EVER read in my life! I rate it a 9.8 out of 10. A reason why I love this book is because it has so descriptive words that I can imagine every word Gail Carson Levine writes. One piece of writing I like that is very descriptive is: "The hurricane tore a mast off the pirate ship and blew the ship out to sea, A mermaid was catapulted fifty feet up the beach, and her friends had to dive to the ocean floor for safety. Inland, even the dragon Kyto cowered in his prison cave.”
As you read this book, you will notice that there are many themes. One of the themes is kindness. There is kindness in this book because someone sacrifices something for someone/other people. Another theme is bravery. There is bravery in this book because it takes lots of bravery for Rani, Vida and Prilla to go on the quest for the 3 items and for the egg to be restored by Kyto. A third theme is teamwork. There is a LOT of teamwork in this book. Rani, Vida and Prilla need teamwork to go on the quest. There is also teamwork when all the fairies use their talents to do their jobs. Another theme is friendship. There is friendship in this book because everyone is friends with everybody else and helps each other when they need help. A fifth theme is comforting. In this book, there is a lot of comforting because Mother Dove got VERY sick and hurt when there was a hurricane.
Gail Carson Levine was inspired to write this book because Peter Pan was her most favourite book when she was growing up.
If you read this book, I GUARANTEE that you'll LOVE it! 98.9% of the world loves this book and rates it a 9.8 out of 10.
