Product Description

From AudioFile

Don't have a cow, man--Bart Simpson is a girl! This loosely kept secret is exposed in full as voice-over artist Nancy Cartwright, ebullient and high-energy enough to light up her native Ohio, tells all. "Simpsons" fans will revel in the insider information; biography fans will enjoy the memoirs of an actress who committed to her dream and saw it through with spectacular results. Cartwright certainly has a dream job--six hours of work a week, great compensation, and the ability to walk down the street unassaulted by celebrity-seekers. A feel-good, rollicking listen. From Booklist

Cartwright is the voice of Bart Simpson, and in her enthusiastic, candid memoir, she delivers an inside view of the show that has become such a cultural phenomenon. An introductory chapter breezes over Cartwright's early fascination with voice work; her education and serendipitous mentor-student relationship with Daws Butler, the voice of Yogi Bear; and her early career as a cartoon voice actor, including stints on My Little Pony and Friends. But she devotes the majority of the book to giving fans what they really want--the who, what, when, where, and how behind each episode of The Simpsons. Included are the show's creation story and plenty of long anecdotes about the guest stars (the Elizabeth Taylor piece is excellent), along with Cartwright's own experiences with her strangely anonymous brand of celebrity and her advice for people interested in the business. Cartwright refers to her own "overly ebullient nature," and the book's voice is relentlessly cheerful, almost giggly, with constant asides such as, "I'm suuure! Ohmygod!" and exclamations about brushes with fame: Tom Jones "was such a total stud!" But in between the giddiness, she throws in enough hard facts and industry gossip to appease even the most jaded Simpsons fan. A hilarious must-read for the show's cult following and for media students. Gillian Engberg

4.0 out of 5 stars A very happy and productive 10 year old!!, Sep 24 2003
A very informative, highly personal and fun read! I liked the way Nancy includes the reader in the important periods of her career.I always wanted to know how much work went into making animated shows, now I have more appreciation of the work involved.I also liked the inside scoop she gives us on the higher profile celebs that she has met thru the show.I felt like I now knew them as she did.
Nancy's joy for life and her adventure in it comes through. She shows a great love and appreciation of her fellow artists and colleagues.Being a legend in the voice over field,it's great to see Nancy passing on great tips and great admiration for her peers and the legends to come. A very very lekker(cool) read. It is easy to see the fun had in writing the book. It comes across from page one and pervades thru to the end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh man, is this tedious., Sep 15 2003
By A Customer
Being a huge fan of the Simpsons, I was excited to finally get my hands on this book and delve into the minds who create such poingnant social satire. The fact that the book was in the bargain bin should have been a tip off....this book book is plain awful.

There seems to be a prevailing sentiment in the book that the voices make the show, and while the voices certainly are integral, the writing makes the show. Ms Cartwright seems to be in denial of this fact. She is certainly a talented voice-over actess, and she should send the writers a present daily for rescuing her from a world of "My Little Pony".....

3.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Isn't Funny, Nov 22 2002
You are probably considering this book for the same reason I did--you like the Simpsons, and want some behind-the-scenes info.

Well, Nancy has VOICED plenty of funny jokes, but this book makes it painfully apparent that she didn't write any of them.

Her humor is corny and told in the silly, nudge-nudge, "knock-knock" style. Not at subtle; not at all Simpsonian.

The writing is bubbly and forcibly emphatic--it's told with a "AND THEN GUESS WHAT HAPPENED IN MY WONDERFUL LIFE!" tone. FAR too many exclamation points. It gave me a headache to make my way through the pages. The only behind-the-scenes bits were in diary form and made her seem like an eight-year-old with a crush on all the actors she worked with.

In short, this book is punctuated with annoying exclamation points and bad jokes. Although Nancy Cartwright tells it in a "I-can't-believe-this-happened" way, the book is irritatingly self-congratulatory, as evidenced by stories of her flaunting her Bart voice to get attention and special treatment.
