Product Description

An all-new version of one of the key titles in the entire Forgotten Realms novel line.

This title is the first in a series of recovers of the popular Avatar series. At the time of its original release, this series presented key events that impacted the entire Forgotten Realms world, and the effects of those events are still felt in current novels. This re-released series will have a cohesive cover design and all-new art. This title was originally released underneath the author pseudonym Richard Awlinson.

When the gods are banished from the heavens, they must travel through Faerûn in the guise of mortals.

When four companions, last survivors of the Company of the Lynx, find themselves in possession of a mysterious amulet, they must escape death at the hand of Bane, god of murder.

When magic itself runs wild, no one can say that the most innocent of spells will not destroy the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING TRILOGY!!!, Jun 4 2004
By L Gontzes (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: SHADOWDALE (Mass Market Paperback)
Definitely a great fantasy epic and one of my personal favorites, The Avatar Trilogy- Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep, is about the Time of Troubles when the Gods walked the Earth (in this case Toril). The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. The authors have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies, and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies. Love, honor, bravery, magic, and heroes are all about. In conclusion, it's what Fantasy reading SHOULD be. A GREAT trilogy indeed and a "must read" along with James Lowder's Prince of Lies and Troy Denning's Crucible: The Trial of Cyric! DON'T MISS IT!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Search for the Tablets of Fate, Feb 23 2004
This review is from: SHADOWDALE (Mass Market Paperback)
The first book starts off a bit weak, I agree. But as it progressed I began to thouroughly enjoy it. Though it definatly reads more like a campaign module than a novel. It was also very interesting because it dealed directly with the gods. Something not a lot of novels do. All in all if your a little patient with the begining I think you will enjoy it. Heres a little bit of info on it :)

*******MINOR SPOILERS********

The Tablets of Fate have been stolen! Ao has cast the gods of Toril to the earth untill they have been returned. The gods are forced to take on Avatars (Mortal Form).

Magic is now unstable since the gods have begun to walk the realms. Cleric can only cast their spells if they are withing 1-mile of their diety's. The arcane weave is wild. Sometimes spells work, and sometimes they go haywire producing effects unimaginable and usually horrible.

Bane & Mykrul: The god of strife and the god of the dead team up with the intention of returning to their kingdoms and destroying Ao.

Mystra: Searches for a shard of power she had hidden with a mortal being before being cast from the heavens by Ao.

Four mortals are drawn into the conflict. Kelemvor, a warrior with a dark and deadly curse. Midnight, a mage with a strange pendant grafted to her neck. Adon, a cleric of Sune. And Cyric the rogue.

What will happen? Who will live? Pick up the novel and find out yourself.

The Time of Troubles has begun!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth it..., Oct 21 2003
By Kelley M. Frankovitch "kfrankovitch" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: SHADOWDALE (Mass Market Paperback)
I found this book in one of the many boxes of books in our closet, on a night when I was looking for something to alleviate my boredom. To that end, the book served it's purpose.

The concept for the novel is intriguing, particularly if you have some basic knowledge of its place in the mythology of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The four main characters (Kelemvor, Midnight, Adon and Cyric) find themselves in a world turned upside down by the expulsion of the gods from the heavens. The gods have taken avatars (i.e. human hosts) and are attempting to reassert themselves; only adding to the chaos in the Realms.

Unfortunately, the potential of that tale was not met. With the notable exceptions of Kelemvor and Cyric, I felt that the characters were one-dimensional and wholly uninteresting. The story itself was thin, with leaps in logic that I found implausible. To put it quite simply, it was fluff.

I was entertained enough to attempt the second book in the trilogy (Tantras). However, I only made it a few chapters before I gave up because it was simply too much of a stretch. I suppose, to wrap up, I agree with those that have said it is the best DnD module they have ever read. The books did feel like Mr. Awlinson played in a game with that plotline and then attempted to turn it into a novel.

I would only recommend the book if you are looking for an easy read to kill some time.
