Whisper of Waves and it's succesor, Lies of Light, show just what can happen when a fantasy writer strives for something greater. In this case, reinterpreting The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand) and reimagining it in the fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms.

This book breaks every fantasy convention I can think of that most WoTC books are so full of. From an unlikable main character (and not in the genre of reluctant anti-hero), to an almost complete lack of swords and sorcery to having a gay character whose sexuality is irrelevant. If you want something that breaks the molds of what shared-world fiction is like, then this is it.

A big kudos to both the author and to Wizards of the Coast for having the guts to publish this series. I can only hope it sells so well that they realize that setting the bar higher can only help them and make the Realms and any other of their many gaming worlds a better place.

This book has a flow that doesn't seem to generate a continued interest. Every chapter doesn't neccesarily follow exactly the chapter previous(and each is only pages long). The concept is novel and the writing good, but just as I got into a section it was over.

A book with a better flow to it is one that I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

Athans' Whisper of Waves goes beyond the simple "kill the x, save the y" formula of many Dungeons and Dragons books and goes deeper.

Characters are emotional and flawed, with many mature aspects, like cross-dressing, self-mutilation, sex, and insanity in ways, which are for the most part ignored in this genre. Readers will be enthralled by the sweeping story taking place over a longer-than-average timeline. Characters are unique and three dimensional, possessing deeply flawed, yet gripping personalities.

Readers should enjoy this book for it's mature handling of a genre which is not always meant for the mature. Younger readers should steer away though, as the subjects are not always comfortable to read.
