Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Miami lawyer Gail Connor (Suspicion of Deceit), 34, is tough and aggressive ("the only recourse," she says, "is to be a bigger s.o.b. than the next guy"), and as this gripping, dark story unfolds, it's easy to see why somebody is out to get her. Divorced and in a custody battle with her combative ex-husband for their 10-year-old daughter, Karen, Gail is about to be married to Anthony Quintana, a top criminal lawyer from a powerful Cuban-American family that may have ties to organized crime. Gail is also handling a nasty divorce case for Jamie Sweet, whose husband, Wendell, has shady business dealings that might link Quintana to some illegal businesses in Colombia. Gail begins to get menacing phone calls and her car is vandalized. Then Karen is threatened with a grisly death. Who is responsible? As the threats mount and her law practice threatens to spin out of control, Gail begins to have serious doubts about both her ex-husband and Quintana. With a fine combination of romance, cultural clashes and police procedure, plus some razor-sharp portraits, this story develops into a riveting thriller whose only flaw is that the author may tip her hand a bit too early. From Library Journal

A prominent lawyer who has just left one of the biggest Miami firms to open her own office, Gail Connor is used to stressful situations. She's in the middle of a nasty divorce and bitter custody battle, has moved into a new house that needs major renovations, and is engaged to another well-known Miami lawyer. As if this isn't enough, a stranger is calling Gail and threatening her 11-year-old daughter's life. Parker (Suspicion of Deceit, LJ 1/98) has written another suspenseful story that keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Despite some slow patches, it's intriguing enough to be recommended for all public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great suspense novel, Jan 14 2004
By Nino Mariano (Fairfield, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Suspicion Of Betrayal (Paperback)
From the first page to the last, this was a real suspense book. Without giving too much of the story away, it's about a high-class lawyer who lives alone with her daughter. She then started to get these weird and threatening phone calls, which then turned into things that were far more serious. As the story goes on, twists and turns await the reader, and blood is spilled and fingers are pointed. There isn't much else to say about this book other than the fact that Barbara Parker is a genious when it comes to writing suspense novels. Be sure to check out her other novels!

4.0 out of 5 stars Connor And Quintana Are Back In Ms. Parker's Best To Date!!, Oct 13 2003
By Jana L. Perskie "ceruleana" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Suspicion Of Betrayal (Paperback)
Gail Connor, successful litigation attorney and single Mom is back along with daughter Karen, ex-husband Dave, and hunky fiance Anthony Quintana with a suspense thriller that will keep you up reading way past bedtime.

Gail, as always, is trying to juggle motherhood, her career, and her relationship with Quintana, a Cuban American defense attorney, and frequently comes up short. With her marriage only weeks away, a new house to be renovated, a troubled adolescent daughter, and an ex-husband who is battling her for custody of their child, she has more on her hands than usual. She is presently working on a difficult divorce case involving a millionaire, who pleads poor, and his abused wife. Then Gail receives a chilling anonymous phone call threatening her life. The call is repeated and her car is vandalized. Next, and most frightening, her daughter's life is threatened. Gail panics. If all this isn't enough to stress her out completely, she begins to suspect Anthony of shady dealings with organized crime.

Barbara Parker is at her best with this fourth novel in the Gail Connor series. Along with the chilling mystery she delivers intelligent insight into the Miami Cuban American community, both cultural and political. It is not necessary to read the other books in the series to appreciate and enjoy this one. I have read all four novels, in order, and am more addicted to the stories of the lives of the main characters, and their development, than to the mysteries. The characters are some of the most original, realistic and compelling that I have discovered in light fiction. Ms. Parker's people are not always nice, and the friction in their relationships is familiar, refreshing and on target. I highly recommend this book, as well as the other "Suspicion of..." novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better in the beginning, then somewhat tiresome., Aug 13 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Suspicion Of Betrayal (Paperback)
This is a 2.5 or 3 star book. At about page 100 I correctly predicted who the villain was. Not many plot twists or original dialogue. After a while the main character's personality becomes immature and belligerent, which makes it a little tiresome toward the end. I did still want to see how it all turned out and finished the book, but I highly recommend books by Sandra Brown (Exclusive, Unspeakable, Envy) much more!!
