Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in cinemas. The idea of invading aliens ray-gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movie's kooky humour seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors (most of whom get zapped or kidnapped for alien science experiments) include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones and Pam Grier. --Jim Emerson

2.0 out of 5 stars doesn't stand up to repeated viewing, Aug 22 2007
By falcon "disdressed12" (canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
to me, a true test of a good movie is one that stands up to repeated
viewing.this isn't one of those movies.the first time i watched it,i
liked.by the second viewing, most of the jokes grow tired and old
quickly.as a matter of fact,i was bored most of the time.the movie is a
sort of spoof of the 1950's alien invasion films.there is one thing i
really liked about "Mars Attacks".that is-- the weapons the aliens
have.i won't say what they resemble, but they do look humorous.upon
first viewing, you may laugh yourself silly, but i'm betting the novelty
will wear off quickly.not the worst movie of the genre, certainly, but
nearer the bottom than the top.for me,"Mars Attacks" gets a 2/5

1.0 out of 5 stars Mars Attacks-a bomb of universal proportions!!, Sep 13 2004
By Robert Badgley (London,Ontario,Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I can NOT in good conscience give this movie anything but ONE-HALF a star!!.
This is one of THE worst movies ever made. This so-called "send up" on Sc-Fi movies of the 50s fails on all counts.
It is a most UNFUNNY movie.
It is filled with an allstar cast that has virtually no where to go with a convoluted and terribly lame script.
It's important to note that Director Burton wanted not only to do a"send up" but also pay homage to the Sci-Fi genre. When the movie is not pathetically and desperately trying to be" funny", it is pathetically and desperately trying to be " serious".It no more succeeds in one than in the other.
The movie just doesn't know what it wants to be or do.
Burton trys to make the aliens/picture funny and might have succeeded had the aliens remained in the awkward and/or bumbling category but when they viciously attack (and in graphic detail !) the concept becomes derailed immediately. This sends we the viewer into an intellectual quandry. We start looking for the "hook" or the"bridge" in the plot. What device is being used here to convince us that this picture can/will be serious but at any moment become a parody/funny?The answer?......nothing.It tried to do two quite disjointed things and totally failed all around.
Not a movie to recommed in any way, shape or form.
Please note:
Clothes pins are unfortunately NOT included with this DVD!

3.0 out of 5 stars mars attacks-an all star cast, Jul 15 2004
This review is from: Mars Attacks! (VHS Tape)
well theres not much of a story.mars attacks.stars are many.jack nicholson is the president.christina applegate is a rednecks ol lady.is that wyona ryder?maybe not.danny devito plays a gambler.wayne newton as well wayne newton.the kids can watch it,but it could freak out the real little ones.tim burton directs this one so it is great as usual.it is one of his best films.there are many creative ideas and imagination galore all throughout this one.the aliens are abselutely hysterical.christina applegate is in it but only for a second.then theres this chick who cheats on michael j fox with pierce brosnan.is this guy always stealing someones woman on his movies?anyway, shes tacky.the hippie chick in it is hot but very deeply emotionaly disturbed.this is a really funny movie and everyone but jack nicholsons personal best.the special effects are not fantastic but the ideas that go into them are very creative.
