Elizabeth Berg's previous novels about the feminine experience in its various stages of girlhood, adolescence, and adulthood have won her a loyal following for their emotional accuracy and powerful voices. In
Joy School, Berg's newest book, young Katie's first experience of intense romantic love--with a much older man--becomes not just a crucible for the lessons of love in its various guises, but a rite of passage.

Picking up where Durable Goods ended, with 13-year-old Katie and her dad moving to Missouri where she is once again the new kid at school, Joy School is a wise and funny look at the turbulence of adolescence. Berg captures the social politics of high school well. The new characters of Katie's extended family are well constructed especially Jimmy, her 22-year-old heartthrob, and Taylor Sin, the "bad girl" who takes Katie under her wing as her dad's influence wanes. Cheryl Ann is still a factor from Texas, but Katie is fully coming into her own. Narrator Jen Taylor once again breathes life and humor into Katie. A very successful union of reader and author and a series of stories with solid legs. Recommended. Joyce Kessel, Villa Maria Coll., Buffalo, NY
