Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Ablow doesn't mince words when it comes to titles (Compulsion; Projection; Denial), and the name of this entry, number four in the Frank Clevenger series, says it all. The psychopath in question, Jonah Wrens, opens the book blasting down the highway locked into anger mode. He's scattered 17 bodies behind him and is on the lookout for number 18. Ablow distinguishes this serial killer from his fictional brethren by making Wrens a brilliant psychiatrist, the savior of disturbed children. This is a subject dear to Clevenger's heart. After years of dope sniffing, womanizing and drinking, the forensic psychiatrist has adopted troubled teen Billy Bishop. He now faces life with a kid who has all the same problems and addictions he used to suffer from himself. At the same time that adopted son Billy is tossed out of school for peddling dope, Clevenger is tapped by the FBI to aid in the search for the so-called Highway Killer. Clevenger knows he should be home tending to Billy, but the lure of the hunt and the stirrings of lust engendered by bombshell FBI psychiatrist Dr. Whitney McCormick convince him to take the case. Meanwhile, Wren continues his murdering ways while moving from job to job, healing and saving abused children as he goes. The author's gambit is to put the reader into the uncomfortable position of actually admiring some of Wren's deeds, and it's an original twist on the serial killer formula. Abel tosses in a gratuitous, last-minute female-in-peril sequence, but most of the loose ends are neatly tied.

From AudioFile

The key to an effective thriller is its antagonist, and psychopath Jonah Wrens, a child psychiatrist known as the Highway Killer, fills that prescription with heart-stopping violence and carotid-artery twitching suspense. Series star forensic psychiatrist Dr. Frank Clevenger has his hands full with a new romance, a troubled adopted son, and self-revealing psychotherapy that ends up on the front page of THE NEW YORK TIMES. Author Ablow loves all his characters equally, even giving his villain a multidimensional personality that actually plays on the listener's sympathies. Reader Alan Sklar creates the soothing voices of Wrens and Clevenger with a believability that keeps the listener spellbound. 5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, Jun 25 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Psychopath: A Novel (Hardcover)
I could not put this book down. It was riveting. Frank Clevenger, a forensic pathologist, is on the trail of a strange and unique psychotic killer. Meanwhile, Clevenger struggles with a blossoming romance (with a blonde, slim, beautiful FBI agent, of course - no hero could possibly fall in love with a woman of average weight.), and a troubled stepson, which both add to the tension. The best part of the story involves the trips inside the killer's mind - unique and utterly chilling, and at times the killer was almost sympathetic, which made the book even more creepy. I could not put this down and eagerly look forward to Ablow's next book (which I already bought in hardback.) My only complaint is the title - I felt this book should have been called something else. The title feels like a rip-off of Hitchcock, and detracted from the merits of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Right path., Jun 20 2004
This review is from: Psychopath: A Novel (Hardcover)
While there were a few flaws or weaknesses this time - some letters fictionally published in the "New York Times" contained language that I doubt the Times would have accepted under any circumstances, as well as a disappointing lack of character development of supporting character North Anderson - this novel still emerged as my favorite thriller so far this year (with Lee Child maintaining a close second). As other reviewers have noted, forensic psychiatrist Frank Clevenger seems to have quelled many of his personal demons this outing. Just in time to meet up with a character who may prove to be his opposite number. After this, what remains? One could only fantasize of having Ablow & Harris team-up and allow Clevenger & Lector to cross paths.
