Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The small town of Yorkshire Falls and its colorful inhabitants including a mysterious panty-raider and a fun-loving but devious mother are a sturdy stage for Phillips's (Erotic Invitation) romantic romp. After news of his mother's weak heart summons him home, globetrotting journalist Roman Chandler loses a coin toss with his brothers that determines who will relinquish his bachelor status to give their mother a grandchild. Roman decides to "settle down" without giving up his travel-intensive job, and as one of the most handsome men in town, he can have his pick of the local women except for Charlotte Bronson, his high school crush. Thoughts of her parents' miserable long-distance marriage keep Charlotte from accepting Roman's proposal, despite the sexual sparks that fly at their every encounter. Mutual attraction eventually proves too powerful to resist, however, but first Roman must win her trust. Though Phillips gives sensual friction and emotional introspection equal attention, the emotional chemistry between Roman and Charlotte merely simmers while the sexual chemistry explodes. The first in a Chandler brothers trilogy, this entry will encourage readers who enjoy dining on passion to pick up the next book, but those who prefer more emotionally bonded characters may chose a different course.

From AudioFile

What woman wouldn't want to marry handsome, charming Roman Chandler? The one woman he wants! Roman has come home to find himself a bride and give his mother grandchildren. But the one woman he wants is Charlotte, who will not let him keep his traveling ways. William Dufris's robustly masculine voice exactly fits as Roman tries to convince Charlotte he is the man for her. Dufris reads all the characters with notable conviction and animation. His female voices are buoyant and girlish; his male voices are deep and husky. All the characters are well differentiated vocally. The tone is even and clear and perfectly appropriate to each situation. J.F.M. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun Reading!, Jul 2 2004
By A Customer
The Bachelor By Carly Phillips is the first of the Chandler Brothers Trilogy. This is one of the first contemporary novels I've read (I'm more of a historical romance person). This was a fun read. Nothing earth-shattering or profound. It's a cute story about a mother and her three grown sons. Mom wants all three sons to get married, settle down, and give her grandchildren. However, she has to feign an illness just to get the ball rolling with her three sons who have no interest in getting married at all. "The Bachelor" starts with the youngest named Roman. The second is, "The Playboy" the middle son, Rick, and ends with "The Heartbreaker" the oldest son, Chase. I am currently reading "The Playboy". So far so good. In conclusion, "The Bachelor" is a four stars. Only because there are some parts in the story that makes you want to roll your eyes...haa! haa!

4.0 out of 5 stars Light and Funny!, Feb 2 2004
By Kristen (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
If you are looking for a light, humorous romance, this book is perfect. The book focuses on the Chandler Boys (mainly Roman Chandler) and their desperate mother, Raina. Raina claims she has a weak heart in order to get her sons married with children. All three brothers are confirmed bachelors and are reluctant to get married. Roman is the youngest brother and by the loss of a coin toss is propelled to be the first to settle down. Which also means he may have to give up his job as a foreign correspondent. Then Charlotte, the love of Roman's life who got away, enters the picture...
This story is somewhat predictable but very whimsical. Reading this story left me wanting more, so I moved on to The Playboy and then The Heartbreaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Newsman and Stud Loses Bet and Finds Love, Dec 4 2003
By PadreRat (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
In Carly Phillips book, "The Bachelor," we are introduced to the Chandler brothers. There is Chase Chandler who gave up his dreams to run the small town newspaper when his father died. Then there is Rick, the middle brother, who was previously scorned in love and is a confirmed bachelor. Lastly, Roman is the baby who comes home from his foreign correspondent job when their mother takes ill. Little do they know that Raina plays on their sympathies by letting them believe her condition is much worse than it really is. Her fondest wish is to see her boys settled and have grandkids. The sons have a terrific idea to determine who will be the "lucky" person to fulfill Raina's dream. Roman loses or wins (depending on your point of view).

While back in the town that hasn't changed since he left, Roman starts to scout out potential wives. That's the think about small towns...not much selection. The one person he won't consider is Charlotte Bronson for the role. She was the only one who rejected him in high school. He is still confused by her actions because they had chemistry. Charlotte's father had dreams of making it in Hollywood and left the family behind to pursue his dreams. He came back after long absences only to leave again. Roman's plan is to find a wife that won't mind him traveling to far off places and then cruise back into town to be a father and husband when it's convenient. Knowing Charlotte's past, he refuses to hurt her. The trouble is when they catch up with each other, there is that same pull.

A subplot is there are burglaries going on in town and Charlotte's store is the common denominator. Rick asks Roman to help him track down the thief. The characters involved are colorful and quirky. Since this is the first book in the series, you want to meet the townspeople so you know who they are for the next novels.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It delved into the emotions of relationships in a real way. It was not overly serious but I would not call it a romantic comedy. It is similar to "Ally McBeal," in that it falls somewhere in the middle. I can't wait to start the next book in the series, "The Playboy" tonight.
