Convinced that widely disliked Harriet Hollingsworth was murdered, Jake and her friend, Ellie White, team up to investigate. As accidents and the death toll mount in the small island town, crumbling foundations and rotting clapboards become secondary to discovering the identity of the perpetrator, who appears to have a diabolical blueprint for homicide that includes Jake's own family. Jake won't let physical injuries, starting with yet another fall off a ladder (evoked on the cozy yet menacing jacket), slow down her pursuit of the truth. Lending support are Wade, her husband; Sam, her teenaged son; and devoted friends who always seem to be there when they're most needed. A sleuth as tough as the nails she drives into the walls of her 1823 Federal home enhances a clever plot, which comes to an unexpected and explosive conclusion. Many will relish the vividly described Down East setting, but for anyone who's ever enjoyed making a home repair it's the accurate details of the restoration of Jake's old house that will appeal the most.

Do-it-yourselfer Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree (Wreck the Halls), a former financial consultant-turned-Maine sleuth, worries about a missing elderly recluse with snooping proclivities. Coincidentally, the retired cop who purchases the old lady's cottage saved Jake's life long ago and has been searching for her father (presumed dead by everyone else) all these years. And the last murderer whom he pursued has apparently followed him to Maine, causing a wreck that injures Jake's son. No down time here, then, either for Jake or her fans, who will be vastly entertained by her sleuthing foibles, animals, fixer-upper accidents, and eccentric friends. For most collections.

I am not impressed. That pretty much says it. This book was very light reading, you could blow it away like a dandelion. I like my books with more heft to them. There was not enough characterizationï¿the people came across as being cardboard. Graves means well as a writer, sheï¿s picked an area which no one else has, concerning a woman and her friends who get involved in mysteries through their home repair. Thatï¿s very strange to say the least, but there are other mystery writers out there who use cats, who do catering (which leads to trouble), etc. So I guess a book using home repair as a catalyst for crime is not any more farfetched then the other things.

This book was so uninteresting to me, that every time I picked it up to finish reading it, I couldnï¿t remember the plot line or the characters, and Iï¿d have to read back a bit to remember what it was about. I know my memory is shot sometimes, but it isnï¿t that bad, and I donï¿t have that problem with other books!

It's a bad couple of days for Jacobia (Jake) Tiptree and her family. After falling off a ladder while working on her old house's gutters, Jake's son is involved in a truck accident, her husband is nearly killed by an exploding shotgun shell, and she discovers major foundation problems. She also decides that the vanished woman down the street must have been killed and it's up to Jake and her friend Ellie to solve the mystery. A questionable foundation man, annoying ex-husband, con-man ecologist, and a cop who seems to think that everything is about him add to the complexity.

Author Sarah Graves seems to know her home repair. For anyone (like me) who has attempted to rennovate an old house, many of Jake's frustrations will ring true. As a loving mother, abandoned child, and hardworking sleuth, Jake Tiptree makes a sympathetic character.

I found the mystery in UNHINGED to be a bit over the top without being funny. The killer's motives are illogical (admittedly he/she was crazy, but still) and few serious mystery readers will be thrown off by the rather weak red-herrings that Graves offers. All of Jake's sleuthing doesn't really lead to much except an exploration into the culture of Eastport, Maine (admittedly, Eastport, Maine seems pretty interesting). I would have liked to see more action on the part of Jake, more logical action, and especially action that had a direct bearing on solving the mystery.

Jacobia Tiptree strikes again! I love these books -- they're like potato chips for the brain. I was sorry in this volume not to learn more about the town of Eastport, but happy to learn more about Jacobia's past. The mystery itself is interesting, and the evolution of Victor, and Sam, and Maggie's characters continues pleasingly.
