Stephanie Plum, Trenton's favorite bondswoman, is having a career crisis, which gives Janet Evanovich plenty of opportunities to showcase her series heroine in a variety of alternative vocations, from dry cleaner to factory worker. Most of them don't last a full working day, which is good for the reader, since it plunges Stephanie back into the always seedy, often dangerous, and always colorful world of fugitives who'd rather flee than face their day in court. She may be tired of having her life threatened, her cars torched or blown up, and her apartment broken into, but one thing she can say about her job is that it's never boring... and neither is she. Despite her intentions of going straight at a job with a little more security and a bit less excitement, an old client won't let her--he keeps leaving her threatening notes, stalking and scaring her, and making sure she needs the protection of the two men in her life--Joe Morelli, the sexy cop who's been bedding her since high school, and Ranger, the even sexier tough guy who can take down the meanest fugitive around but has a tender spot in his heart for the plucky Ms. Plum. All Evanovich fans' favorite characters people this sprightly caper novel, including Lula, the fast-food-chomping former hooker who's hot to take over Stephanie's job but really belongs in a WWE Takedown; Grandma Mazur, who'd rather go to a wake than a fancy-dress ball; Grandma Bella, the matriarch of the Corelli family whose evil eye frightens even the indomitable Stephanie; and Valerie, Stephanie's sister, who's about to embark on another trip to the altar. A great beach read, Eleven on Top is a guilty pleasure that will delight readers of the author's 10 earlier novels and should win her even more fans. --Jane Adams

Amazon's Significant Seven
Janet Evanovich kindly agreed to take the life quiz we like to give to all our authors: the Amazon Significant Seven.

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Uncle Scrooge adventures by Carl Barks. They gave me a lifelong love of the adventure story both in film and literature. And I wouldn't mind pushing my quarters around with a bulldozer in real life, either.

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: Book: The Neiman Marcus holiday catalog (I can pretend I'm shopping.)
CD: MTV’s Grind, Volume 1 (Happy music and I love the samba.)
DVD: Shrek 2 (Happy movie.)

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: "No. Your butt doesn't look big in those pants." Said to myself.

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: No phone. Locked door. Room service. Silence. My cat (Gus) on my lap.

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: "Later, Dudes!"

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets)

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: The ability to eat Cheez Doodles and Krispy Kremes and never get fat.

From Publishers Weekly

New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum (last seen in 2004's Ten Big Ones) stumbles out of the gate due to some forced humor, but she eventually hits her usual entertaining stride in a tale that includes exploding cars, volatile wedding preparations and heated romantic entanglements. Stephanie decides to quit her job and seek less dangerous work after receiving a couple of disquieting notes. But the notes turn to threats and attacks, and she learns that her ineptitude is not confined to bounty hunting but transfers well to a succession of low-paying, sometimes humiliating jobs. After taking on Stephanie's previous duties, sidekick Lula naturally calls on Stephanie to lend a hand so that her bounty hunting travails continue unabated. Foul-mouthed Lula proves to have some pretty brutal ideas about how to bring 'em back. Bestseller Evanovich may be performing the same tricks over and over at this point in the series (the bumbling sleuth act, sexual-tension jokes, etc.), but most readers will find this a pleasing romp.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Stephanie (Thank you, Ogden Nash), Aug 18 2007
By Amanda Richards "Modest to the extreme" (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Stephanie's mad as hell and she's not going to take it anymore. Ten books of bounty hunting, being covered in garbage and getting shot at have taken a toll on our intrepid yet klutzy heroine, and that's not even counting all the exploding cars. So she makes a big decision, hands in her fake badge and heads back to the normal workforce. Of course, what's normal for Stephanie would send anybody else stark staring crazy, and holding down a day job proves to be extremely challenging.

Stephanie's first boss wasn't fair
Stephanie, Stephanie didn't care
The boss was sleazy, the boss was lecherous
The boss' intent was clearly treacherous
The boss said, Stephanie, good to meet you
How do Stephanie, can I eat you?
Stephanie, Stephanie didn't worry
Stephanie didn't scream or scurry
She raised her boot and was willing to use it
She got the job but then managed to lose it

After that escapade she tries working at a Dry Cleaners and then at Cluck-in-a-Bucket, but her mind is not fully on the task at hand, as she also has to find time to help Lula, the new bounty hunter on the block, survive the current family drama and try to keep her men in order. I should also mention that someone from the past is busy trying to kill her, leaving her little notes and explosive devices.

The man said, Stephanie, say goodbye
Time's up Stephanie, time to die
Stephanie, Stephanie didn't worry
Stephanie didn't scream or scurry
She showed no fear, though she almost threw up
Then she watched in shock as her car just blew up

It's another fairly normal week for Stephanie Plum, and another funny but predictable episode in the series. Still a very entertaining read even though the major characters aren't doing anything new, but in Eleven on Top it's the bad guys that bring the excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads Like a Script for a Hilarious Slapstick Comedy, Jul 15 2006
To write for television, you have to create a memorable scene and finish it within 90 seconds. That's tough for comedy because you have to end each scene with a laugh. As wonderful a novelist as Janet Evanovich is, there's an even better script writer hidden inside her novels.

In Eleven on Top, Janet Evanovich has created a memorable scene and laugh every page and a half. That's very tough to do, but she's done it!

Although most will not want to put the book down (who wouldn't want to laugh almost nonstop to the end of a book?), you can read this book before going to sleep knowing that you'll reach a natural breaking point every page and a half.

Much of the humor is visual. It's a remarkable strength of the writing in this book that you can so easily see the slapstick. Few writers can capture slapstick in writing. Eleven on Top marks a new high in Ms. Evanovich's talent in this regard.

If you don't know Ms. Evanovich's writing, it's very much on a par with the very best scripts that Lucille Ball used in her shows with Desi.

Oh, yes, there is a plot. But it's there mainly for people who cannot enjoy a book without a plot. Almost any other plot would have done as well.

Stephanie finds that bounty hunting is just too disgusting for her . . . and quits Vinnie. For the first half of the book, she lurches violently from one job-related adventure to another. In between, Lulu persuades Stephanie to "assist" in capturing a particularly recalcitrant scofflaw. In the second half of the book, she finds a job she likes . . . but it has other complications that you'll love reading about. Someone is also stalking Stephanie and threatening her life. Morelli is obsessed with Stephanie's body . . . and Stephanie finds she "likes" the attention. Under duress, Stephanie swears off sugar . . . with sexy consequences. The sexual tension in this book is really hot! In her spare time, Stephanie also plays "maid-of-honor-to-be" for her sister with more humorous consequences.

The story has a better balance between the Ranger and Morelli sections than many of the others in the series. I generally like the books that have lots of Ranger in them better than the ones that are all Morelli or crime fighting. Ranger's mystery is more appealing to me than Morelli's lust.

If you like sexy humor, I thought that Eleven on Top was a new high for Ms. Evanovich as well. The flirtatious comments are wonderful!

Smile while you laugh and laugh through your smiles with Eleven on Top!

Don't miss this book!!! It's the fun read of the summer of 2006.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still loving the series but Evanovich needs to step it up a notch, Jul 6 2006
By Saya "Kaijin" (Anjou, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I still love me some Stephanie Plum hyjinks! She's still the same ol' crappy bounty hunter with a penchant for destoying her cars and attracting all the wrong kind of attention...but the formula is getting a bit old and wearing thin after this eleventh book in the series. What was once original, hilarious and quirky, I find myself laughing a whole lot less and wanting to smack Steph upside the head more times than I would like. The problem is that since the first book, nothing much has changed. Her hamster Rex is still (impossibily) alive after eleven years (hampsters live to be 3-4 years max.), her relationship with Morelli is stuck in the same old place it's been since they started a relationship, in book four! Ranger is still a complete mystery, Lula is still a complete nutter (although she is one of the few people that still make me laugh) and Stephanie still sucks at being a bounty hunter (and still refuses to carry a damn gun! I mean after so many attempts on your life it may be time to carry a piece ... but then again she'd probably end up shooting herself!). I hear book twelve will have serious revelations about Ranger, to which I say, "It's about time we got something new!!!"
Don't get me wrong, I still liked the book cause it's still a fun read, but it really is beginning to feel as though I've been reading the same story for a while now and Janet needs to change something ... I don't know, but I sure hope book twelve will be like reading the 12th in the series and not as if I've already read that story before ... hasn't really changed since book 8!
