Product Description

From Library Journal

Readers who thought The Bridges of Madison County was a romantic book should try this story of honest and enduring love from the author of Talk Before Sleep (LJ 3/15/94). The first-person narrative describes an ordinary woman caught up in unusual circumstances. Lainey is a wife/mother/office worker whose life is suddenly changed when her husband is sent into a coma by a freak accident. The only one who believes that he will one day wake up, she visits him daily, bringing him stimulus from everyday life in an attempt to reach him. "I line up the little spice bags all across his chest. All across his University of California T-shirt are requests from the kitchen. Come back, says the curry, the oregano. And me." Lainey is sustained through her ordeal by the support of two special women: Alice, who lives next door, and Evie, the ghost of the woman who lived in Lainey's house in the Forties. A touching and enjoyable read, this novel is romantic without being a romance. Highly recommended for popular fiction collections.?Debbie Bogenschutz, Cincinnati Technical Coll.

From AudioFile

Lainey struggles to cope with daily life: taking care of her two daughters and holding on to her belief that her husband who is in a coma after a freak accident will recover. This rich and emotionally true production explores Lainey's efforts to bring her husband back through touch, smell and conversation. Megan Gallagher's narration is flawless; conveying all the ranges of emotion that Lainey experiences, she draws the listener into Lainey's life. Her semi-voiced narration clearly indicates changes in characters, and judicious use of music and echo effects let the listener in on her husband's "thoughts." This audio experience will leave the listener moved and enriched. M.A.M. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

This was without a doubt one of the best books I've read in some time. Elizabeth Berg has made Lainey, the main character, so belivable. You feel like one of your best friends is hurting and there's nothing you can do about it. This book was about such sadness and pain (both for Lainey and her friend Alice), but also about profound joy, and a real appreciation for the little things in life we take for granted. I will definatly read more by this author, and recommend this book to all.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Berg always has Range!, Jui 14 2004

I've read every book by Berg except this one, "Range of Motion."
And every single time Berg manages to move my insides around a bit, tug at my heart, and continually make me laugh, even in the midst of tragedy...
She's that kind of writer.
What I love about Berg the most is her observations about life. It's like, "Yea, man. I know just what you're talking about. I've been there. I've thought the same thing."
This is her greatest strength---Identifying with other women.

"Range of Motion" is about a marriage. It's about Lainey who is so in love with her husband that she is willing to wait for him, love him right out of a coma.
It's about believing in something so despartely that one can make impossible things happen.
And of course Berg adds characters like Alice, the next door neighbor, because she adores and knows we all adore having girlfriends to lean on,confide in, love.

Berg is a writer who does not let the reader down...but gives them a safe place to go, even if that place is falling apart at the seams, a light flickers in the distance as a kind of hand for us to hang on to.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Fantastic and moving, Mars 9 2004
This review is from: Range Of Motion (Paperback)
This is one of the few books that have brought me to tears... tears rolling down my face, dripping across my nose and onto my pillow. Elizabeth Berg never handles a situation like you'd think it would (or probably should) be; she handles it in the way in which it would truly happen. What would I really think if my husband were in a coma? No really, what would I be THINKING? It's an incredibly complicated concept, even more heart-wrenching than other books about actual death that I've read. She has a wonderful, intimate way of bringing the same hurt, confusion and intensity of emotions her characters experience into the mind and heart of her readers. It's a very genuine thing that keeps me reading her stories with open ears.
