Lady Ardith Winter considers herself the ugly duckling in a family of otherwise beautiful women. With great difficulty, her suitor--St. John Worth, Marquis of Rohampton--convinces Ardith that she is worthy of a man's love and that she has a special beauty of her own. This is a Regency romance, so don't expect in-depth analysis, but there is at least a superficial attempt to explore the psychology of a young woman's poor self-image caused by a parent's cruel remarks. The real strength of this novel is in its clear depiction of Ardith, whose unconventional looks and strong independent streak put her outside the norms of the era's rigid society. Romance readers will enjoy this.
