From Amazon.com

It is always night in the city of Ember. But there is no moon, no stars. The only light during the regular twelve hours of "day" comes from floodlamps that cast a yellowish glow over the streets of the city. Beyond are the pitch-black Unknown Regions, which no one has ever explored because an understanding of fire and electricity has been lost, and with it the idea of a Moveable Light. "Besides," they tell each other, "there is nowhere but here" Among the many other things the people of Ember have forgotten is their past and a direction for their future. For 250 years they have lived pleasantly, because there has been plenty of everything in the vast storerooms. But now there are more and more empty shelves--and more and more times when the lights flicker and go out, leaving them in terrifying blackness for long minutes. What will happen when the generator finally fails?

Twelve-year-old Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet seem to be the only people who are worried. They have just been assigned their life jobs--Lina as a messenger, which leads her to knowledge of some unsettling secrets, and Doon as a Pipeworker, repairing the plumbing in the tunnels under the city where a river roars through the darkness. But when Lina finds a very old paper with enigmatic "Instructions for Egress," they use the advantages of their jobs to begin to puzzle out the frightening and dangerous way to the city of light of which Lina has dreamed. As they set out on their mission, the haunting setting and breathless action of this stunning first novel will have teens clamoring for a sequel. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell --Ce texte provient de la Hardcover édition.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–This truly superb audio recording of the novel by Jeane DuPrau (Random, 2003) takes place in the dark city of Ember, a decaying place with no natural light surrounded by the vast Unknown. Although ancestors had arranged for information on leaving Ember to be made available after the inhabitants have spent 200 years there, a corrupt mayor lost the information many years before the novel begins. Two hundred and forty-one years later, Ember's electrical lighting frequently fails, supplies are dwindling, and the populace is growing increasingly frightened. Twelve-year-old Doon and his acquaintance Lina are intent on finding a way to save Ember. After Lina finds a mysterious and fragmented paper titled "Instructions for Egress," they think they have a way out. Can they escape from the villainous mayor and his soldiers? Can they figure out the missing letters and words in the message? Do they find their way out of Ember and up to a post-apocalyptic Earth? Wendy Dillon, one of the most talented readers of audiobooks, does an amazing job of creating different voices for each character, has absolutely perfect diction, and skillfully conveys the building suspense. Exceptional care has been taken to faithfully convey the author's excellent tale through a combination of a superior narrator and evocative sound effects. This engaging novel is an exceptional audiobook.–B.Allison Gray, John Jermain Memorial Library, Sag Harbor, NY

3.0étoiles sur 5 A conflicting mix of good and bad., Juil 1 2004
Par Un client
I don't normally pick out fantasy books I don't like. I'm the type of reader who's very picky about the books I choose, and admittedly, if a book doesn't capture me within the first chapter or so, I'll generally put it right back on the shelf. That's why I was so surprised by the outcome of The City of Ember. I picked the book up from the library, intent on an exciting, captivating fantasy story with an original concept and strong character development. This is what I had heard from friends and family of mine. When I opened the book and began to read, I was surprised, and admittedly impressed. They were right, this was an engaging book... at the beginning that is.

The City of Ember feels like an unkept promise, once all is said and done. The basic plot-line was creative. The characters were well portrayed, if perhaps not terribly interesting. Even Jeanned DuPrau's particular style of writing was unique. That being said, I think I've listed everything about this book that was noticeably enjoyable for me. After the first couple chapters or so, the book begins to go downhill. The basic idea with which the story started out with was drawn out and winding, and although this is by no means an essential for a good fantasy book, there weren't any real elements of surprise in the story.

Those are minor complaints, however. My biggest problem with this book, is that it doesn't flow well. I by no means want to undermine the imagination Miss DuPrau put into this book, but if you'll notice, on the back cover, it states that Miss Jeanne DuPrau used to be an editor and technical writer. This is both a good and a bad thing. For one, no grammar mistakes made it through to print, which was nice. There were no confusing sentences or phrases which you had to read and re-read to understand. Indeed, the only problem with the flow of this story, is simply that her sentences feel too short.

Whenever you feel yourself getting into that 'roller-coaster' effect that you get in books, the feeling where a story grips you and won't let you put it down, you feel yourself jarred out of this reverie by a large clump of short sentences. It feels like each line was cut short, and that the passage lacks in creative detail. I even found myself thinking 'she could have combined those three sentences...' then I'd think of what it would sound like -had she done that- and would end up continuing from that point in the book not with a paragraph of short sentences in mind, but a few, fluent, longer sentences which I had stopped to conjure up in my head while reading. I don't want to sound arrogant or rude, but for me, the book simply didn't flow well.

So, here's a quick summary for those who don't have time to read the whole review...

PRO'S
*Imaginative plot concept
*Believable and likeable characters
*Creative and fun setting

CON'S
*Choppy feeling flow
*Minor character development
*Slow moving, and at some times, drawn out plot line

Well, all that being said, if you're a die-hard fantasy fan, I recommend this book. It's an entertaining read, but if you're looking for a fluent, quick moving, and/or complex fantasy book, I recommend you look elsewhere.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Interesting concept with weak execution, Juil 21 2009

This review is from: The City of Ember (Paperback)
City of Ember will be good for children at the low end (8 or 9?) of the young adult age range. The concept is fairly interesting and the action moves along fast enough to keep readers interested.

However - older readers will find this to be pretty weak stuff. The parallel between Ember running out of light bulbs and food and the earth running out of natural resources makes your eyes roll ever so slightly. The two main characters - Doon and Lina - are very thinly drawn. In fact, the author tries to give them depth by giving them one single character trait each: Doon has to control his anger which (when he gives in to it) has "unfortunate consequences", and Lina has to protect her very young baby sister (in theory making her a mature older sister character). Ho hum - doesn't work. The two characters are boring.

A lot of it is very thin actually - the dozen pages where the children realize the mayor is a crook... try to expose him... and realize the whole system is against them and that they'll have to fend for themselves - pales against what is happening in other y/a fiction (Voldemort, and his predecessors in the "Dark is Rising" series for example).

Anyway - good enough for your youngest child who will read anything, but doesn't have the depth that your older readers are now used to.

3.0étoiles sur 5 An interesting yet different read, Juil 11 2009
Par Karoline (Richmond BC) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: The City of Ember (Paperback)
Its certainly a very different world. Ember is a dying city where blackouts happen frequently and no one has ever ventured into Unknown Regions because its all darkness and theres no such thing as portable light. Its hard to describe the city but its one where everything seems to be recycled. Even scrap wood parts and pieces of yarn because they have a limited amount of supplies and its dwindling fast (pencil crayons go for premium here!). Its certainly hard to imagine a city such as this where they dont even know what candles are (youll see if you read this book).

Theres a lot of mystery and unanswered questions, naturally as this is the first book. However I think its a great buildup of action and intrigue that makes it a great fast read. Its certainly a quick one, as I started last Sunday and havent picked it up until today and finished it all. It certainly was interesting enough to go through an entire evening reading. I think its because the setting is different and theres enough plot to keep your interested. The characters are likable enough as the two main ones (Lina and Doon are very outspoken and individualistic which makes them stand out from the rest of them). I think its rather nice to just have two central characters in this book, too many would have ruined it and would have made things all muddle and confusing.

Be sure to pick this book up if youre into something different!
