Product Description

From Amazon.com

At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery, trying to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you've ever read.

Gail Carson Levine's examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales takes some satisfying twists and deviations from the original. Ella is bound by obedience against her will, and takes matters in her own hands with ambition and verve. Her relationship with the prince is balanced and based on humor and mutual respect; in fact, it is she who ultimately rescues him. Ella Enchanted has won many well-deserved awards, including a Newbery Honor. (Ages 9 to 14) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly

4.0 out of 5 stars Ella Enchanted, Aug 28 2007
By Aqua (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ella Enchanted C (Hardcover)
When I first picked up the book, I thought that this was going to be just like the movie. However, most of the main parts were different. Then I discovered that it was even better than the movie. There was more of a main idea in the book than in the movie, where most of the movie was mumbo jumbo. Ella Enchanted sticked to the original story Cinderella, but had twists and turns in it. That was what I really liked.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BESTEST IN THE WORLD! Enchanting Book!, Feb 15 2006
By Katie (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ella Enchanted Rpkg (Paperback)
This book is extremely good!! I'm not one for magic, and fantasy, but this is a must read!! It's a bit different from the movie. Although it's Ella who has a curse, it's like the book puts a curse on you!! You can't put the book down until you've finished. I'm still reading it, but it's already my favourtie book. You HAVE to read this, even if you aren't a fantasy reader!! There is much more magic, Elfian, Ogrese, and Gnomish language. Mystical creatures. This book is so enchanting. Do yourself a favour, and read this today. This blows grat books, like Lily's Crossing, and Kira-Kira away!

5.0 out of 5 stars I want more!, Sep 6 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Ella Enchanted (Paperback)
Wow! What a book! I first read this book after seeing a poster for the movie. When I saw it in our library I was to much of a fantasy reader to pass it up. After I read it I was so entranced I bought it the next time I saw it in a store. Gail Carson Levine is such a great authur. She is so great that I want to read her books over and over again. And I do. I read it almost every month and I still enjoy every word of it. I get so into it that I think angry thoughts at Hattie when she is being nasty to Ella, and i feel for Ella when she is forced to do everything she is told. I really recomend it to everyone who likes a lot of different things to read about.
