Book Description

Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods is a work of monumental importance--the first book to introduce the shocking theory that ancient Earth had been visited by aliens. This world-famous bestseller has withstood the test of time, inspiring countless books and films, including the author's own popular sequel, The Eyes of the Sphinx. But here is where it all began--von Daniken's startling theories of our earliest encounters with alien worlds, based upon his lifelong studies of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history. Most incredible of all, however, is von Daniken's theory that we ourselves are the descendants of these galactic pioneers--and the archeological discoveries that prove it... * An alien astronaut preserved in a pyramid
* Thousand-year-old spaceflight navigation charts
* Computer astronomy from Incan and Egyptian ruins
* A map of the land beneath the ice cap of Antarctica
* A giant spaceport discovered in the Andes
Includes remarkable photos that document mankind's first contact with aliens at the dawn of civilization.

1.0 out of 5 stars Actually, Morrigan, this book SHOULD be ridiculed., Aug 7 2003
This review is from: Chariots Of The Gods (Paperback)
Here, in a nutshell, is Von Daniken's theory:

- Primitive savages (i.e. non-Europeans) weren't intelligent enough to create these monuments, and their own great civilizations for that matter, all on their own. Thus, those outside influences that created these civilizations MUST have been aliens who, coincidently, looked much like Europeans. -

It's not difficult to counter Von Daniken's claims. From a scientific standpoint, he has a theory and twists "evidence" to support it; evidence that would counter his hypotheses is conveniently ignored. In fact, he rarely uses any evidence at all. He merely dismisses the accepted ideas out of hand, and then floats his own ideas as if these constituted evidence itself. When he did try to present physical evidence, as he did with pottery depicting flying saucers, these were proven to be frauds ("Nova" found the potter and Von Daniken had to admit the fraud he perpetrated when confronted). This, boys and girls, ain't science.

I'm torn in rating this book. On the one hand, I found myself laughing a great deal, so in that respect it provided me with a great deal of entertainment. However, it has also contibuted to a lack of scientific understanding of many people today. There are those who accept it without question, and I find this fact scary as hell.

1.0 out of 5 stars Revolting, Dec 18 2002
By Guenevere Feldman (Somerville, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chariots Of The Gods (Paperback)
Von Daniken represents the worst of the archaeological community. When pressed to write a paper about pseudoscience and bad archaeology, I turned to this book, which yielded plenty of material.
Von Daniken simply refuses to put any of his "studies" into their proper cultural context - which is dangerous and simply wrong. I am all for new ways of thinking, but this is not enough to even raise an eyebrow.
Past civilizations deserve credit for their astounding achievements; Von Daniken yanks it away and hands it over to ET.

4.0 out of 5 stars Planet Earth's Forbidden History, May 29 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Chariots Of The Gods (Paperback)
I am an avid reader into the paranormal and I recently read Chariots of the Gods? by Erich Von Daniken. I am absolutely taken back by the theories that are presented by Mr. Daniken. Chariots of the Gods left me questioning the validity of our ancient past on earth.

Did space travelers really land on Earth in the past? Were the chariots spoken of in the Bible really space crafts? Are the Nazca lines really a landing port for visitors from outer space? There are just so many questions that need answering. Erich Von Daniken is on the right track with his book. Maybe we all need to start a new movement to search for the REAL answers that humanity needs to know. Thank you Mr. Daniken for the wonderful book.

Von Daniken has a LOT of good points in this book. Keep in mind he asks a lot of very good questions he isn't trying to say everything as fact which is nice. Read more
