Product Description

From the Publisher

One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea. Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began a hundred years ago. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Suffer the Reader, Jul 16 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Suffer the Children (Paperback)
As a fan of the horror genre, both film & fiction, it isn't often I find myself completely disgusted by a horror story. Bravo, John Saul.

This book is both artless & hateful. The descriptions of torture of children, at the hand of another child, are graphic, sadistic, and completly nauseating.

The story reads like a frustrated juvenille attempt at horror-porn.

Do yourself a favor. Go to Peter Straub, Dean Koontz, Stephen King.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Saul should be the true master of horror novels., Jun 1 2004
This review is from: Suffer the Children (Paperback)
If this novel was meant to be just plain scary it succeded by all means!
John Saul is the true master of horror! Just read his novels, take "Shadows" or "Guardian" for example! What a genius! He should definately get more credit for what he does. I love Stephen King's novels but if you compare them to John Saul's you'll end up with a truly scary conclusion!
"Suffer The Children" stands alone in the category of horror novels for being too unconventional and violent. But it's also so scary! Read it and give a bit more credit than before to the true genius of horror, John Saul!

4.0 out of 5 stars What happens in the past can haunt you in the present..., Feb 2 2004
By Kristen (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Suffer the Children (Paperback)
The Congers were once the richest and most influential family in a small town until the worst happened. A little girl is dead and a man has gone crazy...
One hundred year later, the Congers are not as rich and are plagued by a century old curse. An old painting of an unkown little girl is unsurfaced and then the children start disappearing...

This story is truly frightening. The details of certain scenes are graphic and startling and the plot twists in directions that are surprising. The ending didn't leave me satisfied and brought up more questions then it did answers...
