Ingram

A retelling of the exploits of the Anglo-Saxon warrior, Beowulf, and how he came to defeat the monster Grendel.

From the Publisher

He comes out of the darkness, moving in on his victims in deadly silence. When he leaves, a trail of blood is all that remains. He is a monster, Grendel, and all who know of him live in fear.

Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, knows something must be done to stop Grendel. But who will guard the great hall he has built, where so many men have lost their lives to the monster while keeping watch?

Only one man dares to stand up to Grendel's fury --Beowulf.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Do not be deceived!, Oct. 30 2002
Par Cynthia Howe (California Coast) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
This version of "Beowulf" should NOT be compared, at all, to the original text of "Beowulf". Students should not be taught that THIS story, as re-created by Robert Nye, is reflective of the "Beowulf" written about 1000 AD. The story developed and shared for hundreds of years is characterized by Christian concepts and ideals. This version, written by Robert Nye, reflects our societies overwhelming desire to rewrite history, de-Christianizing it as they go along. Robert Nye has replaced the Christian God of the original "Beowulf" with the mythological Viking god "Odin". The original "Beowulf" tale supports the historical significance that Christian beliefs and ideas had on the overall society of England and throughout Europe. Robert Nye has done a great injustice in adjusting an historical document to reflect his own convictions, or lack thereof.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Beowulf: A New Telling, Oct. 29 2002
Great book. I teach 7th graders that have never willing picked up a book to read. This book does this. The students love the blood, guts, and gore. Even if it is above their level, most students can't put it down.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A YOUNG, SURPRISING HERO, Nov. 20 2001
Par Un client
Hey, all of you people who are interested in reading this book! I read this book in my History class because this is the first known copy of Old English Literature. I would give it a 5 stars, but I couldn't. I would be lying. The book is hard to understand to some young minds, and even being an experianced reader, I found it diffucult to read and understand. However, it is a great tale of an unlikely hero (kinda like Shrek) that uses his weaknesses as strenghts. I would make it a pretty good book, but not the best ever.

1.0étoiles sur 5 This is NOT Beowulf!
Robert Nye has rewritten the Beowulf saga into a nice little stand-alone fable, but it is so far from the original text that it is a disservice to new readers. Read more
