Product Description

Product Description

Ninja . . . that single word conjures up images of mystery and power. The ability to move swiftly and silently, to mesmerize one's victim, to strike infallibly, and then to disappear into the night--this is the legend of the ninja. These nearly sorcerous aspects of the ninja, as well as the exotic weapons they use, are the focus of The Mystic Arts of the Ninja. Its author, Shidoshi Stephen K. Hayes, is the sole American to be granted teaching credentials by the 34th grandmaster of the Togokure School of Ninjutsu in Japan. Going beyond the basic conditioning and training techniques of his best-selling Ninjutsu: The Art of the Invisible Warrior, Hayes explains the most sought after secrets of his ninja training:
  • Hypnotism: Saiminjutsu, the ninja's hypnotic powers are described and explained. Sample exercises are provided to help develop your hypnotic powers.
  • Invisibility: Stealth walking and camouflage are discussed. Hayes provides examples of how to move silently across various kinds of terrain and how to blend into your surroundings to become invisible.
  • Weaponry: The Hanbo cane, the sword, and the infamous shuriken throwing stars are ninja trademarks. Hayes fully describes their use in grappling as well as in attacking.
More than 400 black-and-white photos are used to illustrate the secrets and techniques that have been used by the ninja to surprise and outwit their foes over the past 800 years. The authenticity of Shidoshi Hayes's instruction is perhaps the most important aspect of this book: no other book represents the true ninja tradition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Marketing gimmickry, Dec 20 1999
By Hiro (USA) - See all my reviews
I found this book to be no more than an accessory to a blatant marketing ripoff. The Togakure 'Ninpo' empire that teaches in America is nothing more than a disneyland style money-making scheme. The book is vague, shallow, and makes do with repetitive new-age themes and weak adapatation of over-rationalized budo concepts. I would recommend that anyone interested in Ninjitsu research into areas other than the Hayes/Bujinkan arena. I think if there is a ninja among them it is Hatsumi, who has single-handedly created a false mirage of ninjitsu for an american appetite, and even pulled it over the eyes of his closest students.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not quite there yet.., Sep 25 2003
By A Customer
This book represents Bujinkan jibberish mixed with military style combat. The "Stealth steps" are not only wrong, but explained very poorly, with bad pictures. The sword he has looks funny, and the shurikenjutsu section is quite a laugh. if I threw shuriken like that, I'd never, ever hit a target. The beginning tries to explain "Fu no kata" which is basically techniques that anyone could defeat simply be resisting (somthing people are told not to do while training in the bujinkan).

Don't waste your time with this book. And don't buy Ashida Kim books either (as recomended by er.. another guy). Get somthing based on real history.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Mystic Arts of the Ninja, Dec 31 2002
By A Customer
This book wasn't very good!! I'd much rather recommend
you take a look at some Ashida Kim books!! If you want to learn about true Ninjitsu tactics then check out Ashida Kim's books!! Ashida Kim really knows his stuff, that's why he's
written over 12 books on the Ninja!! I'd check out "Secrets of the Ninja" or "The Invisible Ninja" both by Ashida Kim!!
In those books you will learn about stealth, weaponry, history,
sentry removal, espionage, rigorous training, and secret techniques of the Ninja!! Some of the Language is in Chinese, but incase you didn't know, Ninjitsu came from China!! They are probably the best books on Ninjitsu I've ever seen!! Who ever says he's a fake is full of it!! I've also seen some of his demonstrations where he does things that other styles would be scared to try out!! He really knows his stuff!! So forget Hayes and others, get books from Ashida Kim!! He really is a TRUE Ninjitsu MASTER!!

1.0 out of 5 stars A word of caution.
