Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This lavish, oversized picture book revisits the collaboration between Froud, prominent fairy artist, and Jim Hensen, Muppeteer, in the creation of their cult favorite The Dark Crystal. Reissued after 20 years, this portfolio of sketches and backdrop paintings retains a certain mystique, crammed to the margins with moss-covered runes and medieval diagrams, and peopled by the movie's menagerie of grotesque, shambling puppets. Unfortunately, the narrative fails to support the elaborate art direction, offering a dim echo of the Lord of the Rings with none of the complexity or scope. The long-nosed Gelflings and vulturish Skeksis-as well as the whole hodge-podge of occult symbols and carefully antiquated tools-come across as strangely arbitrary, constantly reaching for a profundity that never appears. But for the many fans of the movie and young children interested in fantasy-adventure, the book will satisfy greatly. Also included in the package is a preliminary 20-page sketchbook for the production, unseen until now.

Product Description

Jim Henson's fantasy film "The Dark Crystal", featuring the concept design of artist Brian Froud, has developed a big cult following over 25 years. This is a reissue of the work as a collector's edition. It contains all of the art and text of the original volume - plus a new essay by Froud, illustrated with never-before-published paintings, drawings and sculptures from the film's archives. This edition also features a facsimile of a 20-page booklet Froud and Henson created to present the film to backers, which gives an overview of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian Froud is an inspiration to illustrators!, Oct 17 2006

This book is absolutely brilliant, Froud is an amazing illustrator and I'm so pleased that his concept art is shared around in such a handsome book as this. A lot of thought has been put into every detail of the designs, from the fabric patterns to the insects, the organic life of each illustration just makes you believe this world is real.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare beauty, Jan 2 2004

I just happen to own the original 1985 copy of The Dark Crystal. To be honest I never knew it's value for content and that it went right out of print. I would say if you appreciate Brian Froud or if you are a collector, I would snatch up this book for it's Brian Foud artwork and it ability to only be in print a short time the second time around too

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, absolutely, Oct 8 2003
By Ryan Reith (oceanside, ca United States) - See all my reviews
I went to the San Diego comicon this year(first time ever and was suprised by the absense of trekkies.lol) and saw some older books with his designs stating that he had worked on Labyrinth and Dark Crystal which are my two fav movies... I had never known that he worked on them.
While I was walking around I spotted a huge booth with prints from the movies designs and this book.
I picked it up and was in awe, it is so awesome and the little add-in the back is great! He was there and I got it signed. Sooo happy!
