From Publishers Weekly

The battle between good, denoted by order, and evil, represented by chaos, underlies this promising coming-of-age fantasy. The youth Lerris, a skeptical misfit, is sent on a journey designed to determine whether he will ever be capable of serving his native land, Recluce, a haven of perfection surrounded by chaos. During training, Lerris is told he is a potential order-master, a possible high-level wizard, who must probe his inner self and discover his powers before he can return home. In war-torn Candar, he finds himself hunted as a rogue wizard and narrowly escapes destruction at the hands of the evil wizard Antonin. Apprenticed to a woodworking genius, Lerris comes to the aid of his ailing master, rebuilding his business and arranging the future of the family. Lerris's acceptance of responsibility and respect for order enable the development of his powers, and his use of order-magic against Antonin leads to a confrontation between the two. Modesitt ( The Ecolitan Matter ) creates a complex world based on a plausible system of magic and peopled with engaging and realistic characters.

From Library Journal

Unable to conform to the rigid laws of perfection and order that govern the land of Recluce, a young carpenter's apprentice undertakes a perilous "dangergeld" journey at the command of the ruling Brotherhood as a test of his right to call Recluce his home. The eternal war between Law and Chaos finds a fresh treatment in Modesitt's latest novel, a fantasy featuring an enterprising hero and a new look at magic. For most fantasy collections.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The BEST books ever!!, Nov. 3 2006
Par Maxine Mccurdy (Toronto Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
I originally bought this book on "accident" at a used book store. Something to read that looked interesting... once I had picked it up I COULDNT put it down. It really makes you want to know what happens on the next page. I was disappointed when it was over... I didnt realize that it was the first(I cant believe my luck) of many. And the thing is every book that comes after it is just as good... i find myself reading until the wee hours of the morning EVERY time i pick up one of these books. They are Defiantly my new favorite series. And if you like fantasy at all you should at least try the first one. I dont think you will be disappointed.

1.0étoiles sur 5 EVER SO DULL...., Juil 13 2004
Par "zachmanners" (Livonia, Michigan) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Looking for a nice meaty lengthy series to get into? Pick another. This is quite possibly the most boring book I have ever had the misfortune to read. Perhaps the other 10 or 11 books are better, but I was so turned off by the first I'll never know. After dragging myself through the last few pages I flung this book like the excrement that it is.(I hardly ever throw things I'll have you know) VERY DISAPOINTING MR. MODESITT JR.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Dull meets pointless, Jui 8 2004
Par Un client
If there's a point to this meandering, repetitive, and banal "epic" I certainly missed it. The author spends almost more time talking about what the main character eats than on what he feels or seeks. The moralism isn't even two dimensional and the characters in general fail to engage either the reader's interest or sympathy. The reveals come out of nowhere, as do the character's various triumphs; right after he gets done telling us how lost and hopeless he is, he goes out and decimates the fearsome enemy.

I kept hoping it would get better, but this trudge never really picks up the pace.
