Review

"Eickhoff presents a poetic, yet violent fiction account of Wild Bill Hickok"--Elmer Kelton on "And Not to Yield"
"Abrilliant, mysterious, and in the end poetic capture of that romantic American figure, the Western gunfighter of old. Wild Bill Hickok comes fully alive in these pages---and dies with equal force."--David Nevin, "New York Times" bestselling author of "Meriwether" on "And Not to Yield"
"In this majestic epic, James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, is seen through a kaleidoscope of mythologies. He is God's Avenging Angel, Odysseus, and Sir Lancelot, Charlemagne's perfect knight, the hero of gaudy dime novels, and an American legend. In his Prince Albert coat and red sash he is also the great pacifier of hungry women from Elizabeth Custer to Guinevere, as well as a killer extraordinaire who offs barmen with aplomb. This is a great psychedelic novel, and Randy Eickhoff is a top banana."--Richard S. Wheeler, Spur Award-winning author of The Exile on And Not to Yield
"An epic novel of an epic life . . . Robust, rich and vigorous, And Not to Yield is a thorough pleasure."---Ralph Peters," New York Times" bestselling author of "The Devil's Garden" on "And Not to Yield"

'And Not to Yield' is a fictional autobiography of James Butler Hickock, better known as 'Wild Bill'. As a Western, it is better than most in the genre- having won the Western Heritage Award for Best Western Novel in 2005.
It is a well-researched novel and Eickhoff does a good job of connecting the dots in making Hickock's life come alive. And what a life it was! From his humble upbringing by devout Abolitionist parents to his stint as a scout in the Civil War, from New York City's Broadway to the card tables of Deadwood, South Dakota, the author has done a fine job in taking us along for the ride.
The pacing of the story is slowed down a few times- once by an unnecessary dream sequence, and again by the inclusion of a lengthy excerpt from 'Harper's Weekly'(which does, however, serve to show us how his legendary exploits were, most times, distorted by overzealous writers)
But for the most part, it is a well-written, humorous homage to a fascinating man and a compelling time period.
