Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The authors of The New Good Vibrations Guide to Sex and The Woman's Guide to Sex on the Web, Anne Semans and Cathy Winks have written a book that may find a wide and willing audience: The Mother's Guide to Sex: Enjoying Your Sexuality Through All Stages of Motherhood. Semans and Winks, employees of famed San Francisco sex shop Good Vibrations, approach their subject with characteristic optimism (one section is titled "Moms Make Better Lovers") and forthright wit, offering answers to such daunting questions as "Can I use sex toys in my last trimester?" and, for single moms, "Where should you spend the night...?" Even moms who aren't troubled by such challenges may enjoy Winks and Semans's chatty, companionable style. Agent, Amy Rennert.

From Library Journal

Sex and motherhood. It's a sorely underdone subject here treated comprehensively, accurately, warmly, and sophisticatedly with a superb resource section. Semans and Winks, coauthors of the also excellent The New Good Vibrations Guide to Sex and The Woman's Guide to Sex on the Web, approach sex and motherhood from four angles: basic components of women's sexuality, sex and pregnancy (just before, during, and just after), sex as a parent, and raising sexually healthy children. The work is greatly enhanced by copious quotations from several hundred moms who shared experiences and tips via surveys the authors posted online. Married, single, heterosexual, and lesbian moms are all included, and often overlooked issues such as circumcision, disability, or having an intersexed child receive coverage. Occasional illustrations would have been helpful, but the book flies high even without them. Highly recommended for all libraries, as there is no equivalent book available. 5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to my clients, Feb 6 2002
The Mother's Guide to Sex provides pertinent information to mothers and their partners. It covers important issues ranging from conception to the challenge of addressing sexuality issues with teenagers.

The authors devote an entire chapter to how and why sexual desire may decrease as the family grows. After all, low sexual desire is one of women's most frequent concerns. In their casual style, Semans and Winks offer various solutions on how to adjust to these changes; and for those interested, they provide suggestions on how to rekindle passion.

Another chapter describes the special challenges that single mothers may meet. I am not familiar with other books having incorporated this topic, making this Guide to Sex useful for women in a variety of settings.

I recommend the book to anyone considering starting a family and to individuals who already have children.

2.0 out of 5 stars May Possibly Conflict With Moral Beliefs, Jan 13 2002
By A Customer
Depending on your moral or religious convictions, you may find this book in conflict with them. I ordered the book based on the reccomendation of a friend, but found it not very helpful because many of the things suggested violate my moral & religious principles. Some examples: strong encouragement to practice extensive masturbation, use of pornography, use of vibrators and sex toys, the authors' stated conviction that "monogamy is boring" [I haven't found it so, wish I had the time and energy to jump my hubby every single night], etc. It also might be worth noting that both authors spent 10 years working in a sex shop selling vibrators and sex toys - they have a *very* permissive perspective on sex, in my opinion.

I expected more help in the practicalities - I haven't lost my sex drive, I just seldom have any energy or time to cater to it, which I find frustrating. I expected more on how to balance life with children and less on practices that aren't an option for me. I'd really have appreciated more suggestions on making an opportunity to enjoy sex with my sexy husband instead of advice to masturbate more often.

This is not a criticism of *anyone's* morals or sexual beliefs. For a person with a different frame of reference, this book would probably be extremely useful. But I do think it is worth noting that some women might find it less useful [or downright offensive depending on how strict their beliefs are]. Those buyers should beware - this isn't the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift, Oct 16 2001
By mary anne (new york city) - See all my reviews
My friend who is a few weeks ahead of me in her pregnancy gave me The Mother's Guide to Sex ... it is SO amazing ... it reoriented me, and the stuff about teaching kids about their bodies and sexuality was brilliant.
