Product Description

In the exclusive, glittering world of business superstars, Nick Sinclair was a legend...

The ruggedly handsome president of Global Industries handled his business the way he handled his women -- with charm, daring and ruthless self-control. A man used to the very best, Nick hired Lauren Danner, and assumed the proud beauty would soon be another easy conquest. But Lauren's flashing wit and rare spirit dazzled him -- and slowly, against his will, he was intrigued, challenged -- and in love.

Yet Lauren was living a lie, a charade that became more dangerous with every passing moment. Trapped in a web of deceit, she fought her growing love for Nick. Her secret could destroy his fragile trust -- and the promise of life with the most compelling man she had ever met!

2.0 out of 5 stars No Standards, April 24 2004
By Liz (Okemos) - See all my reviews
Lauren Danner was a 23 year old secretary with a huge amount of piano talent. She was forced into asking a distant relative for a job when her father had a heartache. The job came with an extra requirement, she had to spy on his estranged stepson, Nick Sinclair.

Nick Sinclair is a poor boy who grew up to be a millionaire playboy. His family hates him and he uses women as toys with no thought whatsoever to their feelings. He meets Lauren Danner, and when she will not sleep with him he degrades her at every possible moment.

Nick is one of those characters who you will never ever root for. He makes one rude and unforgivable comment after another. I have no idea how Lauren puts up with him the whole book, I was ready to give up after the first few chapters. Lauren who is described as extremely smart shows incredibly stupidity in her choice of men.

Like some of the other reviewers I thought this book was well written. Also like other reviewers, I thought the "hero" (If you can even call him that) was a vile and degrading jerk. On occasion he showed promise, but ultimately he never managed to over come his actions. Which is a shame, as it could have been a poignant and touching book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, April 19 2004
By A Customer
I've lost count how many times I have read this book. The first time I read it, I stayed up till three in the morning - I just couldn't put it down. Nick was wonderful, as was Lauren. It was the first Judith McNaught book that I had ever read and is in my opinion, her best. It's one of my all time favourites and is definitely a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, Mar 24 2004
By Y. Collins "yodi1" (Fairfax, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Double Standards represents my introduction to Judith McNaught. She's a good writer. This is a good story. And hey, the male protagonist was a jerk--big deal! The female protagonist was a big girl, and did a great job of taking care of herself in the story. The story is lively in its detail. Based on this work, I will read more of McNaught's efforts.
