Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

With its abundance of characters, subplots and cliffhanger chapter endings, this plodding vampire romance will keep readers in a state of mind-numbing confusion. The plot is far from original an archeologist digs up a nasty vampiress who then proceeds to wreak havoc in Paris. The only ones who can stop her are Lucian, a good vampire from Drake's previous book (Deep Midnight); the enigmatic Brent, who may have supernatural abilities; and Tara Mason, a narrow-minded American whose grandfather happens to be a member of the Alliance, an age-old group dedicated to containing evil. An assortment of other characters join the mix including Tara's flippant French cousin, her mysterious beaux, a determined police inspector, a creepy investigator and a clueless young couple but they only detract from the central romance between Brent and Tara, if one can call it a romance. Brent spends most of the novel trying to convince Tara of the existence of vampires, and after several failed attempts, they share a romp in the hay (literally) and decide they love each other. Drake tells her story in fragments from many different points of view, which leaves readers scrambling to make connections. Unfortunately, there are too many pieces that don't fall into place until the book's lengthy epilogue.

From Library Journal

Visiting her ailing grandfather at his chateau on the outskirts of Paris, American Tara Adair finds him strangely obsessed with the excavation of a local crypt and reluctantly agrees to check out the site for him. But Tara's timing couldn't be worse. Caught within the vaults when the coffin is unsealed and an ancient evil is released to terrorize the world once again, Tara fears that she has become a target not only of a menace she can hardly name but also of a powerful man who is much more than he seems. Fourth in Drake's contemporary vampire novel series, this work is loosely linked to her earlier ones and adds an intriguing werewolf twist. Although the characters could have been more fully developed and the romance aspect stronger, series fans will be waiting for this one. Drake (Deep Midnight), who also writes as Heather Graham and Heather Graham Pozzessere, lives in Coral Gables, FL.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Story, Mar 12 2004
By Elizabeth "lking173" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I have to admit, I love vampire novels, but I am not the biggest fan of Ms. Drake, and it may be because this was the first Drake novel I read. The characters in this novel were not very developed, and in fact the main heroine, Tara, I found to be annoying. Tara goes to Paris to visit her grandfather who may or may not be going senile. He asks her to go and check on an archeological dig, and even though she just arrived, she decides to go to make her grandfather happy. While there of course archeologists dig up a vampire and the killings began. At this point Tara meets Brent, who may or may not be the killer. Tara is not sure if she should trust Brent but at the same time she is attracted to him. This story has many other characters and many other mini plots, but the book never seems to come together. It was an "average" story and I can only give it three stars.

I really started off liking this story and I did like the story but I was disappointed in the ending. I thought it could have been developed better. Sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars Realm of Shadows by Shannon Drake, Oct 16 2003
By "simee" (Goldsboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews
The story plot started out very good. The first couple of chapters had mystery and excitement. I was looking foreward to seeing how these two indviduals were going to get together and solve the mystery. But it started slowing down and the connection just wasn't there. The Characters started out good, but she left them all hanging with no real meaning.
The only real mystery in this book was how all the characters were related to each other.
The love story in the book, if you can call it a love story, was short...you would miss it.( I am not sure if this book was meant as a vampire love story or just a vampire story) The story all together was chopppy. The heroine in this book, if you want to call her that, was not a very good one. The ending of the book had a lot to be desired. This book had potential but got lost somewhere.
