Covering Brooks' childhood, his success as a high-school athlete, his college degree in advertising and marketing, and his eventual realization that music was the career he most wanted to pursue, Howey paints a picture of the person behind the phenomenon, incorporating interviews with Brooks and family members as well as an abundance of interesting photos into the accessible narrative. Eventually, Brooks' persistence (not to mention that degree in marketing) paid off. But his success was not without its price--his marriage went through a very public rough patch, and many of his songs caused great controversy in the country-music world because of topics such as date rape, wife abuse, and an acceptance and tolerance of homosexuality. This biography is not only a portrait of a struggling musician's successful rise to multimillionaire but is also useful for its coverage of how the music industry works in general.
