From School Library Journal
In a story set in the environs of Oklahoma City, Nick tells of his little brother Jimmy's year long, losing battle with leukemia. At Christmas, the boys are given a horse, Jimmy receives a Stetson hat, and Nick gets a pair of spurs, one of which Jimmy loses. When Jimmy dies in the summer, Nick cannot accept his brother's death. The follow ing Christmas, he finds the lost spur star and puts it on the church Christmas tree as a decoration, and a small miracle happens. A wind blows through the church; the spur tinkles, reminding Nick of his brother's laughter, and reminds him too that his brother is with God and is not alone. Nick reveals in sometimes boylike prose his emotions of anger, loneliness, confusion, and emptiness; his parents are less fully realized characters. While readers will understand Nick's emotions, they will find the action of the story less involving.
