From Publishers Weekly

The prolific, award-winning Hatcher offers this message-driven story of the impact of alcoholism on a Christian family in the 1950s, with mixed results. After 15 months of marriage, Deborah Haskin's beloved husband, Andy, dies in a freak farming accident, and she's left with a 40-acre farm and a broken heart. Then Gideon Clermont, a handsome Korean War veteran buddy of Andy's, shows up to help her. Deborah, the first-person narrator, finds solace for her grief in a swift romance, but disaster is lurking. Although she discovers that Gideon has covered up a drinking problem that threatens to destroy their newfound happiness, the co-dependent Deborah reassures herself, "He's fine. We're all fine." Many short first-person testimonies by other characters work surprisingly well to round out the story. However, it is rife with scripture quoting, Deborah talking to God in italics, God talking back to Deborah ("Do you think I was surprised by what you did, beloved?") and Christian lingo that will resonate with a hardcore evangelical audience but lose most others. The second half of the novel becomes more didactic about alcoholism, and Deborah's life is used as a device to demonstrate the novel's view of how Christian women should respond to an alcoholic husband—as the book makes clear, God hates divorce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Shadows, Oct 8 2007
By Tami Brady "Whole Health Therapist" (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
Beyond the Shadows: A Love Story is a touching story about one woman's spiritual journey. Deborah Haskin's life was wonderful. She and her new husband, Andy, had just bought near the small town of Amethyst. Though a city boy, Andy's dream was to become a farmer, have children, and grow old with Deborah. Unfortunately, these dreams were not meant to be. After only fifteen months of marriage, Andy was killed in a farming accident. Deborah was crushed. She was angry at Andy for leaving her and angry at God for taking him.

Then Gideon Clermont came into Deborah's life. Gideon had been an army buddy of Andy's. Just before his death, Andy had asked Gideon's help on the farm. Honouring his friend's request, Gideon set out to help Andy's widow with various handyman chores around the farm.

For Deborah and Gideon, it seemed as though Andy and God had brought them together to grieve and then to live. The couple's romance blossomed and the two quickly wed. Drunk in her new love, Deborah didn't realize that she had forgotten her faith. Moreover, Deborah's wonderful life wasn't really as perfect as she thought.

Beyond the Shadows: A Love Story is a beautiful inspirational story of finding and embracing the Christian faith. I suggest this book to anyone needing a faith lift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Book Previews, July 19 2004
By A Customer
Robin Lee Hatcher tackles a tough subject with great honesty in Beyond the Shadows. A widow, still grieving, finds comfort with her husband's friend. Comfort turns to love.

The early part of the story concerns a couple who are together for the wrong reasons, and is enough of a subject to explore. Now that they are married, they must go forward, but are they outside the will of God? How do they heal from their grief when guilt is laced through the new relationship? How can a new husband fight the ghost of a perfect first love?

Hatcher is delving into a darker subject, though. Deborah discovers that she's married to an alcoholic. Her new husband Gideon, a sweet, sensitive charmer, turns to drinking when life gets unpleasant. Eventually he begins to drink all the time.

Through Deborah, we watch the phases of living with an alcoholic: the denial, the lies, the bitterness, the anger and blame. Hatcher doesn't let her characters off with easy answers, but she does offer hope in the end. As always, her writing is compelling and her characters have depth. She doesn't flinch from hard truths and she never forgets to entertain. Beyond the Shadows is an excellent, intense study of alcoholism and the price people sometimes have to pay for love. - Mary Connealy, Christian Book Previews.com

5.0 out of 5 stars God is in control ..., July 1 2004
By Liz McPherson (Waldorf, MD USA) - See all my reviews
A moving and powerful portrait of alcoholism and redemption. I could not put the book down and will probably read it over and over. As the product of an alcoholic family growing up in the 50s and 60s, I emphathize with the signs, denial, guilt and despair. The actions and reactions depicted in the novel are truly true to life. Ms. Hatcher has once again presented us with another moving slice of real life Americana by tackling a subject that has long been hidden by the stigma of shame and embarrassment. This novel powerfully points out the ultimate fact: God is in control.
