From Publishers Weekly

This highly readable but flawed tale from British horror author Clark (Vampyrrhic, etc.) suffers from multiple personality disorder. It begins as a tale of Sullivan, a small town protected from apocalyptic disaster by dint of its isolation and the protection of outsider Greg Valdiva. Valdiva can somehow sense if strangers seeking entry to the community are infected with the mysterious malady that has wiped out most of civilization. When he detects the zombie-like carriers, dubbed "hornets," he quickly dispatches them. As in many apocalyptic tales, the townspeople go too far in their quest to keep the outside world at bay and eventually turn on their own. In time, Valdiva flees Sullivan and hooks up with a band of young survivors that includes his love interest, Michaela. Just when the reader thinks it's them against the hornets, the hero and heroine find themselves trapped in a bunker with a mad scientist. Meanwhile, a new threat looms: "hives," rooms full of jiggling red gelatin with body parts floating in it, are sucking unwary humans dry. The story's jumpy plot has one benefit-it will keep readers on their toes. But the setting feels more British than American; the catastrophic cause of it all is unbelievable; the dialogue is bland; and the protagonist seems far more experienced than his 19 years.

From Booklist

In this nasty little romp through a post-apocalyptic, plague-ridden country, the mere survival of the human species is highly unlikely. The Gantose plague, at first carried by South Americans, makes people terrified of illness and, eventually, insanely violent. Some pockets of the immune and merely isolated remain, fighting the killer "hornets"--those infected with the plague--to survive. Executioner Greg Valdiva, tolerated by the town of Sullivan because he can sense the presence of the disease in visiting strangers, sees lights across the lake in Lewis and leaves Sullivan to investigate. When he returns, the town no longer wants an executioner and, therefore, no longer wants him. With another Sullivan resident and a band of survivors from New York, Valdiva then has to fight tooth-and-nail to survive. These "heroes" are tough and certainly not perfect, but their fight is engrossing. The ending leaves many questions unanswered, but well crafted stories will do that. Regina Schroeder

3.0étoiles sur 5 Not Blood Crazy but close, Juil 15 2004
Par Dennis Duncan (Greenfield, Tennessee United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I am really into End of the World novels, and Stranger didnt let me down. I liked the storyline, and the pace of the book. I liked the charaters, and the storyline most of all.
It isnt as good as Bloodcrazy though. It has some similar features that Blood Crazy had, but I felt that Stranger had some loose ends in it. You never fully understand the hives, and what man was evolving into, or at least I didnt.
That aside though I liked Stranger, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good End of the World book.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Memorable page-turner, but SO flawed...(maybe spoiler), Juil 11 2004
Par Un client
I'll spare you the book report and shoot to the flaws, as I saw them:

Clark never explains why Valdiva was able to beat up that bully in the middle-school flashback, or why that incident was so similar to his ax-murdering of infected visitors to Sullivan. There would seem to be a tie-in, but there just isn't.

Clark twice, accidentally, refers to his devastated hometown of Lewis as "Sullivan." Why is the book so poorly edited?! Full of errors, like a manuscript that needs one more proofread it didn't get.

What the people of Sullivan do to that girl is so horrible, so putrid, Valdiva should have (and could have, supposedly) ax murdered them all, so why the blank didn't he? Valdiva let that crime go unpunished, and I lost respect for him - and the story - because of it.

Why did Valdiva find himself swept up by murderous rage when confronted by ONE infected monster, but when menaced by a crowd of them, he turned tail and fled with a perfectly clear head like anyone else would do?

Valdiva's method of execution of those poor visitors to Sullivan was needlessly sloppy and hideous. I disliked him for it. The explanation for that wasn't good enough, and that behavior in him didn't even last through the book. Why couldn't he have used a gun from the start?

It P'd me off when Valdiva's little buddy kept showing concern for the putrid townfolk of Sullivan - more so when Valdiva listened to the guy! There was no mercy for infected visitors, and that was "OKAY," so why couldn't Valdiva show no mercy to the worthless citizenry without the book appearing politically incorrect and a bad influence on us readers??

Yes, the novel is VEDDY British for a novel set in America. That was most evident in Clark's use of our mutual language, like the shortening of "around" to "'round," and saying "come to that" instead of "as a matter of fact." But after a while, it didn't distract me.

The flaws rankled as I read, but I didn't want to put it down. Good story, decent writing and, I thought, a GREAT ending.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Doesn't Go Anywhere, Juil 5 2004
Par EdHopper "Painter" (Cary, IL United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Despite the easy writing sytle this writer employs, this book never really goes anywhere in regards to plot. Many interesting plot potentials are brought up but never explored. Perhaps he wrote it this way for a sequel? If not, save your time.
