Just in time for picnic season, Keene delivers this wild, gruesome page-turner about two elderly West Virginia good old boys menaced by giant earthworms—and worse. Octogenarian Teddy Garnett tells this story of a global flood that has left humanity in tatters. Holed up in his mountain home, Teddy and his buddy Carl Seaton struggle through daily life, puzzling over things even stranger than a 40-day rainstorm, including the giant slime-coated holes that keep showing up in Teddy's yard. Before long, Teddy and Carl are fending off man-eating earthworms the size of buses. A helicopter crash nearby brings Kevin and Sarah, the last two survivors of an outpost in Baltimore, into Teddy's story; their tale makes up the even more bizarre second part of the book that explores, graphically, the insanity doom can inspire. It all leads to a slam-bang showdown back at Teddy's house with a creature so monstrous it scares even the killer annelids. The awkward framing story—a crushed, dying Teddy writing the novel in a notebook in the tale's aftermath—though a nod to H.P. Lovecraft and H.G. Wells (both obvious influences), can detract from the plot's urgency. Clunky dialogue also slows the action, but the enormity of Keene's pulp horror imagination, and his success in bringing the reader over the top with him, is both rare and wonderful, and more than outweighs these small concerns. After reading Keene's earlier books The Rising and its sequel City of the Dead, I knew that I would be reading his stuff for years to come. His writing in fast, graphic and enthralling.

This is one author to watch in the future.
The Conqueror Worms is about the end of the world as we know it after it begins raining all over the world, and doesn't stop. The book is told in first person Teddy Garrett, an eighty plus man who is writing down what has happened to him. The character is a breath of fresh air, due to the fact that he is not your average hero. His story of the worms that have come from beneath is frightening. The second part in the book is told from a man named Kevin's perspective, where we learn that there are troubles all over the world and not just in the form of giant worms.

The book is very fast paced, getting right into action immediatly. I really enjoyed it and it only further convinced me of Keene's talent and the fact that I will be buying his books as long as they are being published!

I bought two books at once by this author, thinking that he was good and that the books would be a great read. Turns out they were pretty much the same book, except zombies took the place of worms.

This would have been a good book except that the author inserted the same evil godlike charecter from his other book, which totally ruined it for me. It also destroyed any "stand alone" aspect of the book. What i mean by that is that this book is either a sequel/prequel to his other zombie book or it is not. If it is, it makes no sense because the world can't be flooded out and then overrun by zombies. If it is not, don't use exactly the same plot device and "origin" as the previous book.
