This is the first book by horror writer Braunbeck that I have read. I decided to give the author a try because he has been nominated, and won, numerous Bram Stoker Awards, and I was impressed with a short story he wrote. Keepers was one such nomination and deservedly so.

Gil, the protagonist, has blocked traumatic memories of his youth, including those involving his family and only "girlfriend." He witnesses a man in a bowler hat get hit by a car and, when offering assistance, learns that the Keepers are coming. This accident sets off a chain of events that force Gil to remember his past, discover who the Keepers are, and why they are coming for him.

There is much to like in Keepers: the construction (use of flashbacks), voice changes (i.e., first or second person), interesting characters, unpredictability, and an original story. However, the ending is so surreal and bizarre that many readers may not find it satisfying; it may leave too many questions. I generally don't mind having to figure out the events myself, but Keepers left a few too many questions unanswered for me to be completely satiated. Braunbeck did this intentionally; he wanted readers' interpretations to differ.

Keepers is for those who want to read something different and be left thinking about what just happened and what it all means. I was very impressed with the story, and Braunbeck's books will soon populate my bookcase.
