4.0 out of 5 stars Better that Conqueror Worms, but not as good as Rising/City of the Dead, Mar 5 2007

Well Brian Keene is fastly becoming one of my favorite new horror authors. Some people have got it when it comes to writing and Keene does.

Ghoul is the 4th book of Keene's I've read and I have to say that I really did enjoy it. The story has a coming of age feel to it, the main characters Timmy, Barry and Doug are 12 years old and it is the summer of 1984 (so you get great 80's pop culture references too). What's good about this book is that not only do they have to battle with a real monster (the ghoul does exist) we see through eyes of kids that some of the worst kinds of monsters are more prevelent and harder to defeat (ie parents, bullies, impending adulthood). Like King's It, Laymon's Travelling Vampire Show and Ketchum's The Girl Next Door, we are shown characters that are stuck in the middle of childhood and teenagedom, and are battling monsters of many varieties.
Keen's writing is descriptive, fast paced and interesting, I read this one if a few days. There's just something about the way he writes that make me come back for more. As I said in my title, I enjoyed his Rising/City of the Dead books a little more than this one and I enjoyed Ghoul a little more than Conqueror Worms so I suppose this book is middle of the way for me. However (and especially b/c it contains the first chapter of Keene's next book Dead Sea, coming out Aug 07) I am a fan of his work and will continue to read whatever he puts out there. He is a new voice in horror that should not be overlooked.
