With another bleak vision of the zombie apocalypse, Keene makes a triumphant return to the still-thriving subgenre he helped revive with his 2004 debut The Rising (a movie version of which is currently in the works). Trouble begins when a virus infecting the rat population of New York City begins spreading among animals and humans alike—one bite, one drop of blood or one string of saliva is all it takes to kill its victims, within minutes, and instantly revive them as mindless, flesh-eating zombies. Narrating this grim tale is gay 30-something Lamar Reed, who makes a hair-raising trip through the carnage of zombified Baltimore before he and a small group of survivors manage to commandeer a Coast Guard ship and get it out to sea. Together, the eclectic group search the coast for a safe harbor; meanwhile, an endless parade of zombies search the survivors' floating haven for a way in. Keene piles on the gory thrills as Lamar and his shipmates struggle through this diseased world, though they can be overly chatty at times (dialoging on everything from religion to Joseph Campbell). Delivering enough shudders and gore to satisfy any fan of the genre, Keene proves he's still a lead player in the zombie horror cavalcade. (Aug.)

I have read several of Keene's books, including his two previous zombie stories The Rising and City of the Dead, and enjoyed them all. However, Dead Sea
was a disappointment; it contained nothing new.

As in his previous zombie books, Keene describes a bunch of people fighting off zombies. In this book, the hero is a homosexual black man. He is undergoing the Hero's journey, and we are reminded of this ad nauseam. And if you don't know what that journey entails, one of the survivors just happens to be a Professor of Mythology (or something like that) and he explains everything. Okay, a gay, black hero is novel but what else? Well, apparently fish can turn into zombies too. Sure, why not? If birds and
other animals could return undead in Keene's previous books, why not fish? That is about it for the originality. The zombie battles were exciting in the
first two books but became tiresome in this third. That being said, if you like reading about zombies duking it out with humans, you will probably like this
book.

As an aside, I have read some reviews that state the zombies in Dead Sea are different from the zombies in Keene's previous books. I disagree. I think
Dead Sea is the third in a trilogy. The characters in the book say that the zombies are caused by a virus, and from their perspective that is probably
the most likely explanation. The characters would not have known about the happenings in the other books. The plague is called Hamlin's revenge, but again
this is from the perspective of characters unaware of The Rising. In addition, one of the characters in Dead Sea mentions Frankie and describes her as
a junkie who hangs out at the Baltimore Zoo. Frankie was the heroine in the previous books, she had a boyfriend at the zoo, and she was a heroin addict who overcame her affliction in The Rising. Looking at the book in
this way, some who are familiar with the previous two books may want to read Dead Sea to be completist. But don't expect anything refreshing and new.

Loved it! Was a different take on the whole Zombie infection theory without any "hearts and bunnies" moments....highly reccomend it for the true Zombie lover!

This book is one of the better ones i have read in my time. Unlike his other books there is no "zombie god" or anything weird like that. It is straight up zombies, zombie rats, etc.

The book has a well developed story arc and is well written. I recommend it highly.
