3.0 out of 5 stars Exploitive Social Commentary, Oct 8 2009
By Lovethecraft (Cornwall, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I have read all of Keene's books to January 2009, and Castaways doesn't rank among his best. The story doesn't offer anything new and is full of inconsistencies that detract from the mood.

Castaways places a group of contestants on an island in a Survivor-type television show. After character introductions, a storm hits the island and monsters attack the contestants. The story is supposed to be a tribute to Richard Laymon, an author I don't particularly like, and in this aspect I suppose it succeeds: it's gory, exploitive nonsense.

Some reviewers thought the social commentary elevated the book above the typical horror story, but I disagree. Whatever comments it makes is drowned in sex and violence. Given Castaways is horror though, we should probably expect some blood and boobs. However, the story is cliché and unimaginative: the monsters kill and rape and a rescue is attempted. Also, it almost appears that Keene wasn't paying much attention to the narrative. During the noisy storm, characters huddled in a camp have difficulty talking to one another, but two other characters in the forest talk as if it was a bright sunny afternoon. Despite the rain, some characters remain splattered in blood. The monsters want to use the women to breed and reduce inbreeding, yet they beat and rape their captives so violently that their genitals bleed and they can barely walk. Surely the monsters would know that violent coupling would significawntly hinder the chances of the women bearing children. And these are just a few examples of Keene's inattentiveness.

As a positive, several sequences are spooky, the characters are fun, and the story moves along at a quick pace. Castaways isn't a complete disaster, but I hope Urban Gothic shows a little more creativity, like many of Keene's early novels.
